Server Crash: switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory

I woke up this morning to find that my SME server had crashed.  The monitor login was unresponsive.  I did a hard reboot and here are some of the messages that I managed to write down:

Recovery required on read only file system
Write access will be enabled during recovery

ide: failed opcode was unknown
hda: drive not ready for command

...

(many lines like this with varying sectors, 440637, 440645, 440653, 440661, 440669, 440677, 440693)
JBD: Failed to read block at offset 26819
JBD: recovery failed
EXT3-fs: error loading journal.
mount: error mounting /dev/rot on /sysroot as ext3: Invalid argument
Setting up other filesystems.
Setting up new root fs
setuproot:  moving /dev failed: no such file or directory
no fstab.sys, mounting internal defaults
setuproot: error mounting /proc: No such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /sys: No such file or directory
Switching to new root and running init.
unmounting old /dev
unmounting old /proc
unmounting old /sys
switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory
Kernel panic - not syncing:  Attempted to kill init!

I am shut down.  What is going on?

You are experiencing a crash disk with bad sectors so the system is not able to start. As i can see yo have only one hard disk, i hope that i make a mistake but there is no mention to hdb.
You can try to start your system with a rescue-cd but in the meanwhile it is time to look about backups.

not on the same disks i hope... you have to change your disk .....you shouldn't use them again otherwise you risk to be in the same situation another day....
