[HELP] charmod-108 and fsck errors
« on: October 28, 2002, 05:23:59 AM »
Hello,

I am SME user for now 2 years,
until now, using a 5.0 and very proud of it.
Recently, due to a serious crash (I pluggued my monitor on my running SME), i decided to setup a 5.5.

But i am experiencing two problems and may be could you give me further information about it. I thank you in advance.

While booting and mounting the service, i have this first message:28 00:41:28 chewie rc.sysinit: Setting hostname chewie:  succeeded
Oct 28 00:41:28 chewie fsck: /: clean, 50616/359040 files, 224607/716892 blocks
Oct 28 00:41:28 chewie rc.sysinit: Checking root filesystem succeeded
Oct 28 00:41:28 chewie rc.sysinit: Remounting root filesystem in read-write mode:  succeeded
oct 28 00:41:29 chewie rc.sysinit: Finding module dependencies:  succeeded
Oct 28 00:41:30 chewie fsck: /boot: clean, 28/4016 files, 3161/16033 blocks
oct 28 00:41:30 chewie rc.sysinit: Checking filesystems succeeded
oct 28 00:41:30 chewie rc.sysinit: Mounting local filesystems:  succeeded
oct 28 00:41:31 chewie rc.sysinit: Turning on user and group quotas for local filesystems:  succeeded
oct 28 00:41:33 chewie rc.sysinit: Enabling swap space:  succeeded

My HD was supposed to be freshly formated, but it always display me this message when i boot... what is it do to?

Secondly: i think more serious: I have this message:

28 02:53:10 chewie modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-108
Oct 28 02:53:10 chewie pppd[3161]: pppd 2.4.0 started by root, uid 0
Oct 28 02:53:10 chewie pppd[3161]: Using interface ppp0

I am using Macronix Inc Tulip diver as my ADSL external ethernet card.
Recently, from a local computer i did not have Web, FTP and Telnet service anymore. (I still had IRC).

What coud be wrong?

The 5.5 has been freshly installed with no further packages.
I am running on a K6 2-3D 350Mhz, with 6Mb Harddrive and 192mb SDRAM
And a TNT16 AGP as Video.

Thank you for your Help.

Nicolas

Same problem here, with modprobe: Can't locate module char-major-108

Recently installed logcheck and had never noticed the error before.

I haven't ever noticed any problems and will ignore messages for now or until I hear different.

Sean

I did find this on the Suse site:  Not sure if it helps

Reason:

The PPP Daemon is capable of supporting generic devices (such as /dev/ppp), however, the current kernel version (in SuSE 6.3) is not. This feature will be available in future kernels. Even though the PPP Daemon complains about not being able to find this device, it still works fine.

Solution:

This message is not caused by an error, and it can therefore be safely ignored.
