I tried upgrading to 10 but could not see server after restoring data. I did manage to upgrade RAM from 4 to 12 gigs on a HP server and did put in a new drive Western Digital Gold Enterprise 5 year warranted drive 2 weeks ago as I realized the pair were over 5 years old.
I have an additional drive to put in to replace the raid 1 bad drive. From the mail message received my assumption is the 1st drive md0 is faulty so the system should be shut down, the new md1 drive moved to md0 position and another drive placed in md1 location then after restarting, and seeing if drive data appears in tact, then say yes to rebuild the array?
I am confirming this as I so seldom need to touch the computer and I am unfortunately away and will have to rely on someone else to do this. Hopefully they did the complete weekend backup so there is a further safety net if this fails.

A DegradedArray event had been detected on md device /dev/md0.
Faithfully yours, etc.
P.S. The /proc/mdstat file currently contains the following:
Personalities : [raid1]
md0 : active raid1 sda1[0]
255936 blocks super 1.0 [2/1] [U_]
md1 : active raid1 sda2[0]
1953126208 blocks super 1.1 [2/1] [U_]
