Backup to NAS failing.
« on: April 24, 2021, 08:40:09 AM »
Just realised I posted this to the wrong forum, cannot delete or move it! If someone could please.

Hi one and all.
Have a Truenas NAS that I use for backing up my Mac and Windows PC's, so I know the share that I am using (SMB) is good. Due to a failure in my ancient Buffalo NAS thought I might as well make use of all the space on the newer NAS.
Ever since changing the destination to the new nas, my backups have failed. And the only thing I found was this in the messages log:-
kernel: CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -512
So I tried to mount the share manually with :- /bin/mount -t cifs //10.81.0.5/backup/sme-backup /mnt/smb -o username=backup,password=backup
And it sat there looking at me, and did nothing?

Any suggestions?

Regards Paul.
PS is there a specific backup log file? In logs Flexbackup was empty?

update your NAS to support SMB2 and SMB3 dialect and set it to use SMB2 as minimum.

your NAS uses SMB 1 which is now insecure for few years.

a bug has already been  opened about that issue, most probable fix will be to allow one time restore from an old smb1 share but long terme backup to insecure location is not to be encouraged.

Thank you so much for replying.

Actually Trunas does support and use SMB2 & 3 This seems an issue with SME 9 for some reason. I have even turned on SMB1 and NTLM auth, still failing.

*** No backup allowed or error during backup ***
Error while mounting <//10.81.0.5/backup/sme-backup/>
mount error(95): Operation not supported
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)

Oh well, backup to desktop works, so think I will do that and move over to SME10, which is what started me on this mission :-)

ok. i move back the thread to sme9. i thought you wanted it to be to sme10.

so yest sme10 does support smb2+ but not smb1. and sme9 does only support correctly smb1.
there are early implementation of smb2 but flaky.
