Should I go to 10? or 365
« on: March 15, 2021, 01:21:39 PM »
Hi Guys.
And I say that as I have always considered myself an ardent supporter of SME server, and the great people who write it, document it, and spend hours support dimbo's like me in the forums. 67 years old, life in IT, partially sighted to boot!

Cut a long story short, I have spent the last 4 weeks in hospital with covid pneumonia, came out a complete wreck, mentally and physically. I do hope you all avoid this. (Reetp, thats why you have not seen me on Rocket!)

The reason for setting the scene was that it usually takes me a while to resolve mail issues. Most due to lack of understanding. Here is no particular order some of the issues I had:-
Gmail rejecting all email. (this was due to my server using the ISP as a smarthost, had to manually change the name on the smtp connections) When I did direct delivery even more got rejected. So when you name your server do you name is mail.domain.com  ?

Certificate. Used dehydrated and after much faffing around and some excellent help from Reetp managed to get this working. So is this in 10? It should be. (Opinion)

Dmarc and Dkim surely there must be an easy way to set this up? I complety gave up with none understanding.

So, question, will SME 10 work out fo the box without be being in any of the above states?

Options? Was thinking of 365, just would rather give money to this excellent project.

Kindest Regards

Paul.

Infamy, Infamy, they all have it in for me!

Man you have been in the wars!!! No apologies necessary.

I hope you recover fully.

As to SME it depends on usage. Do you use it as a file server too?

Yes, Google & M$ are happy to ignore email RFCs themselves, and then block all your mail to their servers. They really are 1st class barstewards.

Today you really need EITHER a proper smarthost, or a decent IP with good reputation.

The tricky bit about setting up DKIM & DMARC is the DNS records. But it isn't impossible!

Dehyrated is OK - if you have done it once we can do it again ;-)

Both take some setting up on your part - there is some stuff we just cannot do for you like set up your DNS records!

If you want to give it a go then speak to us on Rocket and we can guide you through, but first, get yourself well!!

Mate, I wouldn't trust Mr MS to NOT do something that effs everything over by introducing a change  you have no control over, jus use win10 for a while

Im far from an expert but i managed to get dkms etc setup on my servers. I use 1and1 and that was the issue historically.
I would say its worth looking at doing it then its done. I can help with what I did if you want to create a new topic.

James

Use a test machine, and one small step at a time.

Read carefully.

There is a wealth of information around, but we are still trying to update the wiki which is a mammoth job.

If you have done your homework you'll get some help!!

For anyone contemplating a toes in the water..updated my long running sme9 home server to sme10, actually did it four times for fun :-)

New SSD for good measure, single drive installed with the nolvm switch, sme9 console backup and restored on the sme10 after it was installed using the console restore. Wanted to make sure all was good so didn't use the restore when asked during the sme10 install, I did one that way early on .. have tested with 2 or more disks (x3) raid was as normal for sme.

Gotchas, none really as such, BUT, be aware of custom templates as they will be restored and may not do what you think in sme10, I had one such that prevented httpd starting, note all versions of sme have had same warning..old lessons. Only other is to always, always, reboot for most should be fine, me I also went through the console Configure menu just to be sure and let it reboot/reconfig..oh and yes, for some reason on my little HP microserver when restored and doing reconfigure found it had swapped the eth card I was using ?? or I wasn't paying attention.. :-)

All up done..new hardware..also found the Microserver is getting a little long in the tooth, couldn't handle my first choice of new ssd, a Samsung 880 enterprise drive, initial install it was blazingly quick, to quick, was getting ata3 errors, went back to a Samsung 840 evo at first, no probs (was one of 2 that sme9 was on) then got a new Crucial ssd, quietly glowing in the corner now.

So jump in water is nice and warm..

One point watch from Terrys notes.

We now use php-fpm.

It's a big leap from where we were and you need to look at custom website templates carefully.

to be more precise we do not use php module anymore. any templates-custom against /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf containing a php_flag php_admin or similar setting will prevent httpd-e-smith to run.
