preferred / recomended mode to run a Win10 as VM inside server
« on: January 09, 2021, 09:18:16 PM »
Hi

I´ve being running a Win7 on SME9 for a loooong time.
Now I´m planning a hardware update and would listen you about recommendadated preferred mode to run it.
It´s an old HP server (ProLiant ML310e Gen8 v2) with 8GB RAM... so I need to think about to upgrade RAM or upgrade whole server.
I prefer last one but not sure it company can afford it!

Thanks by your suggestion. I manage a datacenter and have several DL380 (g5, g9, g10) and love them: no problem at all! I´m not sure if we´ll continue with HPe or change to Dell . I´ll search for it later.
I even think about Microserver (I also own 2 of them!); just not sure about CPU on Gen10 (have none of them!) to run normal SME + Win10 VM.

I´d like to know what do you use (KVM , Virtualbox, ...) to run a small VM inside SME.
Or if your recommendation is to install virtualizer on bare metal and run SME as virtual machine also.
Right now we have no plans to move to cloud.

Regards,

Jáder

HP miroserver N54L with Proxmox, has Koozali CVS and mock setup (CentOS 7), multiple SME VMs for testing..more than happy with Proxmox, previously used ESXi

considering the ease of use of proxmox, i would reslly also suggest that and put sme im a vm, and your win in another one.

that said you still can follow a centos how to to run a qemu kvm setup or use virtualbox on sme, but would be really easier to use proxmox.

Another vote for Proxmox.

I run a production SME9, testing SME10, mock build setup, Win XP (!), Win10, Media player, webserver, Pihole and a low use Linux desktop, etc on it.  ZFS 4Tb and 24Gb RAM.  All on little more than a desktop Motherboard.

OK so I´ll learn about how to install proxmox (never did it!) and try to put SME9 as a VM.

You know you could do it the other way around easily, if it fits your needs:
I run several SME Servers inside Windows Server / Windows 10 Hyper-V wo problems.

I wouldn't trust this for critical mission (gateway/main network server - barebone for that),
but for storage/BackupPC/SME v10 testing it's perfectly fine inside Hyper-V on Windows.

For workloads I directly assign PERC RAID 1 arrays to the Hyper-V machine running SME,
so tehnically if one removes any disk from that array they should boot SME on barebone.
