v10 - latest news
« on: November 27, 2020, 06:09:20 PM »
The few of us doing some work are doing our best to get things working, but the task mountain is big. We know that v9/ CentOS 6 is EOL this weekend, but we can do no more than we are currently doing.

Currently there is only around a dozen (12 or so) of us doing any meaningful work. About 4 or 5 of us doing code (and my bits of coding are tiny as I am useless), and several others doing some testing, documentation etc. Most of us have other jobs, and pandemics to cope with at work (or their mother visiting  ) so we really don't have that much time to devote to this. If my wife knew how much time I have spent on it recently, she'd stab me.

I have said before, and I'll say it again. We really need more hands.

There are swathes of updates coming through that need testing, bugs logging, wiki pages amending etc. You do not need to code to help.

SystemD migration

This is huge and we are around half way through. It is time, and lots of work. Each service has to be migrated. It is slow painstaking work. Manpower helps......

Samba

https://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11196

bunkobugsy has helped me get Samba reverted to the upstream RHEL. We still have some work to do with Koozali/systemd.

https://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11209

wsdd for browsing with SMB needs the same.

Clamav

https://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11194

We've have managed to get upstream Clamav installed and running, again with help from bunkobugsy. Install was pretty brutal to start with... ! It is still very much Alpha but I hope we can get it running smoothly shortly.

We used to roll our own as upstream was so out of date, but they are much more up to date now. So we have updated to 0.102.x Further updates as they are released should be much easier.

We still have quite a bit of stuff to do as a lot of file locations have moved and we need to rip up a lot of old configurations and move them about, but it is a big step forward and will make managing it easier as building it ourselves was a big task.

Spamassassin

https://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11206

Anyway, with a last touch of deftness from Jean Philippe we have managed to get the latest spamassassin 3.4.4 on v10
This needs some serious messing about with as there will be a load of new options we can play with to tune it up more. I am no expert so please tell us what we should look at.

Enhancing Spam management on SME will be a good thing.

There is also work by Brian on smeserver-dovecot-extras and smeserver-unjunkmgr so we can do even more with Junk processing.

-----------------

There are a lot of contribs now in smetest that Brian has imported (he IS Mr Contribs right now!)

They all need testing. There are a lot more that are imported but may not work correctly, We'll try and fix them as we go, but quite honestly we are going to fix the stuff that WE want first...... if you help you can have a say yourself.

So please, get in touch, and get involved.

I'm still very open to suggestion for the next contribs to look at. Search in bugzilla for ones that have been done and try them out! We have even "rescued" unjunkmgr from SME8 (it did not find its way to SME9).

I'll be glad to help, but also glad if you can provide a short path to follow. I use SME, mainly for providing an intranet for my cohousing community. SME is installed on an HP micro server, also providing a LAN for some of us. I have a spare HP micro server, I can use for testing, but of course I don't want this to interfere with the intranet and LAN services.

Should I create a virtual SME 10 server in the cloud? Or use my spare server? And then what? I've been following SME for some years, but don't consider myself an expert.

Thanks for all the hard work, I've been benefiting from in many years :-)

Some sort of VM is best so you can roll back.

Use the Rocket login you have and talk to us.... We can guide you. Just needs time & enthusiasm.

Hello everybody,
I'm interesting in testing/helping with the following contribs:
smeserver-bridge-interface
smeserver-crontab_manager
smeserver-dhcp-dns
smeserver-dhcpmanager
smeserver-diskusage
smeserver-durep
smeserver-lazy_admin_tools
smeserver-letsencrypt
smeserver-mailsorting
smeserver-mailstats
smeserver-mod_dav
smeserver-openvpn-bridge
smeserver-php-scl
smeserver-phpki
smeserver-phpmyadmin
smeserver-qmHandle
smeserver-remoteuseraccess
smeserver-service_control
smeserver-shared-folders
smeserver-smbstatus
smeserver-sme9admin
smeserver-userpanel
smeserver-userpanels
smeserver-vacation
smeserver-wbl

My skill level is moderate, so I'll need some help.

I have VM with Alpha 5 running and updated. When I try to install any of the updates with:
yum install --enablerepo=smecontribs smeserver-ANY

the response is:
No package smeserver-ANY
Error: Nothing to do

I did some of the translations to Bulgarian for SMEServer 9.x and of course I'll do it for 10.

We have started importing and porting contribs to v10 but until we have a working Beta they are only available in test repos.

This is because the core is still changing a lot and they may work one day, and not the next.

PM me with your full name & an email address for notifications and I'll add you to Rocket where we co-ordinate work.

We can help you with what to do.

Hi and welcome.

Most of our development chatter is on my Rocket.Chat because it is easier to help people there and work through problems.

We need people to test - install and try things. Look for problems so we can fix them. You do not have to be a coder to do that (but you will learn a bit!)

If you would l like an account to come and learn some more then PM with your name and an email address for notifications.

If you want to play by yourself then get a spare computer - or more easily a Virtual Machine, get a copy of the ISO and install and then play.

Remember. v10 is ALPHA. It is pretty stable if you know what you are doing, but it is very easy to break it!

Here are some general instructions (ought to wiki this):

1. Install current A5 iso - smeserver-10.0.alpha5-x86_64.iso

2. run a # yum update (DO NOT enable any repos) there are around 360+mb of awaiting, on occasion ie very very rarely smeserver-yum may also need updating first, it may be in smeupdates-testing or updates, so a heads up a quick look under the hood can save a world of grief

3. Make sure to reboot/reconfig

==== for general testing jump to No. 6 ====

For verifications:
https://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:QA:Verification

4. Best practice is to now, select a Bug that need verifying, update the package
# yum update e-smith-base --enablerepo=smeupdatestesting (ONLY this)

5. Now for the fly in the ointment - sometimes, rarely, there will be a package in /smetest that fixes a borked update in smeupdates-testing, that situation arose last 24 hrs with e-smith-tinydns and e-e-smith-dnscache and to a lesser degree e-smith-base these will appear in smeupdates-testing shortly may even be there now, Terry has a look in there and yep they have been moved, so this fly has been swatted.

For general testing:

https://wiki.contribs.org/SME10.0_QA

6. If you do a yum update --enablerepo=smeupdates-testing you will update ALL the packages that need testing - a danger Will Robinson moment - BUT it will bring your install to a point where you could carry out overall testing of the system or Contrib updates/import testing and verification BUT beware you could also kill it
You will need updates from smeupdates-testing to bring you machine up to date

For a VM install of the Alpha release, could that be done using VM Virtual box ?  I have it on my Win10 desktop so installing as a VM on there would be an easy way to get involved.

Yup.

VMs with the ability to snapshot/rollback are vital.

There is info on the wiki, and if ask for a Rocket login you can discuss testing setups etc.

I'll have a look and see if I can work it out. I'm not super technical but it would be nice to try and help.
