Forums vs Chat
« on: March 09, 2020, 10:20:23 AM »
As you probably know I am running a Rocket.Chat 'instant chat' server for Koozali. (Don't tell my wife... it is my work test instance!!!)

We have no intentions of closing the forums. But chat is REALLY handy when developing and testing as you can talk 'on the fly' as you go which is extremely handy and saves a LOT of time.

Terry has been helping me test my updates to phpki and I can literally talk him through, show him screen shots, paste a quick fix etc all there & then. It is damn handy and has been waaaay faster than using foros & bug comments.

Chris has just joined us to help and we can literally answer & explain issues there & then in minutes rather than back & forth over days here. It accelerates the process.

We have chats on development of a new server manager (with themes!!), general V10 development (critical), letsencrypt, SSL/secure and general waffle.

There are only a handful of us but we have a few laughs and some bad jokes (especially Terry).

It is a lot more personal as well, and a good way to make friends with a common interest.

So, if you want to chat, or even better do something to help (just ask us what to do....) then ask me for a login.

(I am not making login sign up generally accessible for now as this is my own server and don't want the hassle of managing spam accounts etc....)

Remember. You do NOT have to be a coder to help. Testing, verifying & bug hunting are easy and vitally important. ANYONE can do that, and we can talk you through if you get stuck.

Come & chat. The best bit is none of us bite :-)

Since we started asking for more help and mentioning about Rocket, we have had quite a few new volunteers coming to help. That is absolutely fab, and thanks to all those who have joined in.

For those who haven't, please don't think the you are not required and can sit back on your laurels and tell us you are too busy and expect US to do all the work.

There are several thousand installs out there still. Only a tiny fraction of those admins help us, but equally want a working system, and very shortly an upgrade.

If we had more people helping, we'd get a lot more done a lot faster. It is a simple numbers game.

3000 admins helping for two hours a week is 6000 man hours.

Until recently we probably operated on about 50. Or maybe even less.

You can see the the maths right there.

So, all you need is a bit of enthusiasm. Simple as that. We can help with everything else.

Ask me for a Rocket login and find out how you can help. It really isn't difficult.

And we have quite a laugh as well ;-)

See you there.

I note this thread has 146 views.

So there are a still quite a few of you out there.

We have now had a few people kindly volunteering to help us which is brilliant.

We need MORE!

All we need is a bit of your time and some enthusiasm. We'll help with everything else.

So if you are grounded by COVID-19 and have a few hours to spare, just PM me your name and email address and I will get you logged in.
