Hello,

My question is :
On the Backup (Affa) Server, should I reinstalled all packages (rpm) manually as the Production server in order to make a full restore (rise) on the backup server?

thank you

A little more reading was required on your part.
From:
https://wiki.contribs.org/Affa#tab=For_SME9
SME server 'rise' function
Note:
Before trying a rise please check /var/affa/YourServer/rpms-missing.txt
You may find there are missing rpms/contribs that template fragments depends on.

It may be necessary to install some of these rpms before a rise to prevent issues.

PS
It even says about it here, in the very article you referred to, so you do need to read these docs more carefully.
https://wiki.contribs.org/Moving_SME_to_new_Hardware
under the Copying data section

You will find a list of RPMs which are installed on prodIP but not on this server (newIP) and also RPMs installed with different versions. Install or update the listed RPMs. To verify, you can run the steps of this chapter again. Finally the rpms-missing.txt should not list any RPMs.

The backup part of sme is huge. I know affa has split but I need that side of it. Sme 10 isn't close and I've been looking at being the git and leaving. I think for those left maybe a figure to continue the project else it does seem bad news

What exactly is your problem or complaint ?
Backup issues or choices ?

AFAIK Affa works OK & so do the other available default backup choices in server manager & there are add ons.

We've been asking for help for ages.

It's not just about money, but manpower.

There is information on how to get involved. Please don't sit there and moan and expect it is someone elses problem. Come and help.

You are equally guilty if SME 10 doesn't get released.

jameswilson,

I'm with SME (e-smith, mitel) since the year 2002. From my experiences with servers (I tested (not only linux) really a lot of distros) in small business units, is this distro the most stable one, and the most easy to run. And of course this includes the crucial point of updating and/or moving to new hardware. Following the explanations of the contribs, the how-to's and the wikis will lead you to a minimum of down time while moving to a new server/hardware. Before you "pull the trigger", searching  for any questions in the forum, might help too. If any questions appear, you are always welcome to ask in the forum. I can only speak for myself - I moved a lot of servers to new Hardware. Can't remember that one broke. After all it's easy. Just follow *exactly* the affa contrib --> moving to new hardware.

Not quite clear to me, what you mean. Could you be a little more specific?

regards,
stefan

In case you prepare the new server with an USB-install you'll no longer find the fedora USB installer. You might want to use i.e. rufus. There's a cavecat if you prepare an USB install. During the install grub will be written on the USB-drive. Your harddrives won't boot (without USB-drive and fixing the grub params).

There are a few ways described how to get grub configured to boot correct. For myself I use the sme rescue kernel line. Keep in mind, that you need to write once again the SME image on the USB-drive. Otherwise the install routine will not start (because of grub sitting on USB-disk). In the install menu you choose the rescue mode. And from there you follow https://wiki.contribs.org/Grub --> Fix the GRUB with the official SME Server CDROM (USB-install).

stefan
