Migrate from 8 to 9. USB backup fails
« on: January 14, 2020, 02:34:15 PM »
Trying to migrate from 8.2 to 9.*, yes I know I am late to the game. When I try to do a backup on my 8.2 from the Admin Console to USB, it gets to about 4% then tells me it failed see logs. Not sure what to look for in the logs. Need some help on where to start.

To help you we need you to help us

Start to put there the error from /var/log/messages during your usb backup.

You can open a second terminal and tun tail -f /var/log/messages during the backup.

You can also look in Server Manager, View log files panel, select Messages & scroll to the time you attempted the backup.

What type of USB are you using, powered or unpowered ? There are issues with some unpowered drives so better to use a book style drive with its own seperate power source.

Also did you format the USB drive for linux ext3 or ext4 ?

Also what is your total disk usage on the 8.2 server, & what size USB drive are you using ? ie is the USB drive big enough to fit the backup file size onto it ?
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

I am using an unpowered USB 3.0. I think my problem is the 3.0, I have read that 8.2 doesn't like 3.0. Total data size is less then 175gb. I am now trying to restore with a "Workstation" Backup I will see how that works

Please....

Pay attention to the questions you are asked, and answer all of them as best you can.

People will try to help, but they need answers.

They are not asking for fun!!

So, format type, logs, etc etc.

Your logs will likely tell the story, and errors.

So watch what happens when you plug in the drive, and what happens when the backup runs.
