Outlook 2019 and SME
« on: December 03, 2019, 10:10:03 PM »
Hi All,

Just installed an Outlook 2019 and discovered that they do no longer support a different username than e-mail addresses for login. This means that I cannot connect to my SME server as it doesn't support e-mail address validation (as far as I know).

Anyone having seen and solved this?

Thanks,
Jesper

There seems to have an answer there https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/cannot-setup-imap-email-account-in-outlook-2019/9599a493-3b80-43c2-b6ae-98d1a9ca26bc

Also is there a way to first setup the username@domain.tld and then add the pseudonyms and select one as default?

I spent a day fighting with this last month, trying to setup Outlook 2019 with a Kerio server.

It looks to me like Microsoft has put significant effort into making it hard to use any mail server except Office365.

My understanding is that - no matter what you think you're trying to do, Microsoft:
- tries to login to Office365 (even if you select 'manual configure')
- then looks for your autocomplete configuration
- then lets you try a manual connection

It may be possible to configure an autoconfigure xml file that would let Office365 configure itself for SME -- but maybe not, too.

I did confirm that I could setup the account I needed in Outlook 2016, then export the registry settings for the new account, load them into outlook 2019, fiddle with the account and data files, and get it to work -- but that seems a bit extreme.

This feels like something we'd better deal with, so I've opened an NFR in bugzilla
Bug 10842

I found a work-around here:
open the control panel and to open "Mail (Microsoft Outlook 2016)", yes it is stil called like that although Outlook 365/2019 is installed. From there you can add and change accounts just as you always did.

I have added this note to the Email / Email Clients section on the wiki:

It looks to me like Microsoft has put significant effort into making it hard to use any mail server except Office365.

Yup - this has been going on for a long while - certainly since they insisted on individual verification of each user email for outgoing mail thereby preventing you using your ISP as a smarthost - years back.

https://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9050

As a result I decided to host my own SME as an email server in the cloudy sky thing without an ISP, but several of the big providers like M$ are also trying to block your legitimate mail with IP subnet blocks etc. (even though they themselves are happy to ignore RFC compliance on a lot of their own servers - can't find their own post in this dammit).

It is why we are moving inexorably to chat (and I know it is the target of chat services) as it bypasses many of the problems with email (encryption being a big one, attachments, etc etc). No, email won't die tomorrow. But the writing is on the wall. It is the next fax.

OT and just my 2C

It's their program and they want you in their cloud. Call it whatever you want...
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.

MMccarn

thanks for opening the bug report.
thanks also for finding the old one.

you can see the file I use added to the bug

also anothe approach( and maybe both should be done) would be to solve this bug for IMAP:
https://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9865

but then we should to the same for POP and SMTP:

One way to fix POP if the current daemon is not able to do this could be to use dovecot for both pop and imap (this was planned https://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7510)
currently we use qmail-popup /qmail-pop3d which use   checkpassword-pam and I do not think they can handle this. Not tested myself.

On the qpsmtpd (SMTP and SSMTP) side, we use auth/auth_cvm_unix_local
it can already handle the @domain.tld

Code: [Select]
   my ($u, $host) = split(/\@/, $user);
    $host ||= "localhost";

My solution: configure on 1st start a "commercial" email (Gmail in my case). After Outlook open go on file > Profile. From this place can open a "old" window to configure all parameter.
