WIN10 join SME Server Domain
« on: October 30, 2019, 02:06:13 PM »
Hello everyone, I know it's a common problem that has been treated a lot but I'm struggling with a problem with win10 adding with a domain configured on SME Server (while it works perfectly on win7)
I've already followed what is said here: https://wiki.contribs.org/Windows_10_Support
but yet I always receive an error saying that the client can't find a SRV record for the domain I'm trying to use.

Thank you for any kind of help

Please start by telling us exactly the steps you have taken so far, and the Windows version.
...
1. Read the Manual
2. Read the Wiki
3. Don't ask for support on Unsupported versions of software
4. I have a job, wife, and kids and do this in my spare time. If you want something fixed, please help.

I tried both on windows 1903 and 1809, I've imported the registry key downloaded from the server, enabled SMB1 on both machines but both failed when I tried to add them to the domain while it works perfectly on win7.
I'm missing something for sure, but I cannot see what..

<sigh> Remembers why he gave up completely on Windows several years go....

Somone with a 10 box may pop in and try and help you but I don't have any 10s at all, and only a couple of 7 VMs.

Have you checked your logs on both server AND desktop??

HI all,

I found that with Win10, (The worst thing MS has developed, infernal contraption), I had to forget about joining a domain, made it a workgroup. Same Username and Passwd on both SME and Win10.
Able to access shared drives, and as far as printers are concerned, I usually do a local PC install.
If you have trouble with email setup, add the mail.company.com with its IP address to the etc\hosts file in windows...
MS hasn't added anything of value, really...
All of the best
B

Check this thread for tips (read it all)

https://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,52644.msg271156.html#msg271156

Excerpt
Is windows set to try & join a AD domain ? (disable AD)
Is domain name longer than 8 characters or has a . In it ? (shorten name & remove the .)

There is another big thread worth reading I will post a link when I find it.
Here:
https://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,53659.0.html

FYI Windows 10 can join SME 9.2 DOMAIN, but you need the right settings in Windows.... & if I recall correctly you do need to apply latest Windows 10 updates from Microsoft.
