Just wondering about the original causative factors.
Do you have a UPS connected to the SME server ?
If so is it configured to shutdown the server gracefully in the event of a prolonged power failure ?
Otherwise were there any instances of someone forcibly shutting down the server using the power switch or removing the power lead or similar ?
Thanks for asking, Janet,
Shame on me, but I had recently moved the server, and hadn't relocated the UPS with it at that time. Regretfully I still don't have a graceful shutdown trigger in place. I guess I deserve everything I get...
That egregious and shamefully irresponsible behavior notwithstanding, I don't believe there was any power interruption at that time: it would have been detected and I would have been told about it because a couple of other devices in the house are actually more sensitive than the server. That is not a definitive response, however.
The only thing of note that occurred that I'm aware of is that one of my sons was making adjustments to his server account directories and Thunderbird email client configuration, and he may not have done everything by the book. That said, I can't immediately think of anything he could have done that would have induced corruption. I'm going to dig around for any other evidence next weekend, and if I find anything I'll report.
Actually, while I write this, I notice that while the backup appears to have completed successfully, I'm still getting periodic (every five minutes, it seems) bdb errors: "PANIC: fatal region error detected; run recovery" (following the guidance from the provided link, I had restarted ldap in debug mode); I guess I'm not done yet.
On a related subject, i owe you an update regarding my rejected .eu, .xyz domain problem. I have not solved it but have at least localized it to the default Thunderbird profile. I had created a second one with the same account info, and that one does not exhibit the behavior. I'll find that thread and report more there.
Thanks for your engagement.
