sent email imap sync
« on: March 06, 2019, 12:20:27 PM »
hi everyone
i set up a smeserver for a client, which downloads 2 remote mailboxes using the fetchmail addon which delivers to a local one (and bcc everything to a hidden one)...

problem: client wants to move or copy all his old received and sent email on the smeserver, i connected to his outlook the new smeserver account and instructed him to copy emails from his local client to the smeserver one... but the actual SENT mail folder seems not visible... or, better, i can't copy his local sent email onto the SENT folder, i have to make new ones...

then he has other local clients which should ONLY send email, not touch or read received email, but the SENT folder are not in sync between them... the SENT folder on his outlook is NOT replicated on the SENT folder i can access from his smeserver webmail, and of course none of the other SENT folders of other clients are in sync, too...

he wants to be sure that EVERY sent email, from every clients, is visible from any client and replicated between them and of course on the smeserver itself, to have a proper backup...

i remember i had to SUBSCRIBE the sent folder a while ago for an other client, but can't remember how... anyone could help, please? Thanks in advance

I am afraid your explanation is not all that clear so it is hard to give comprehensive advice.

So the client has downloaded emails to his Outlook, presumably using POP and now wants to put them back on the server, using IMAP ? You should be able to do this, but there may be some gotchas depending on your Outlook version

See something like this https://www.msoutlook.info/question/486

NB If you use Outlook in IMAP mode (which is what you probably need to to do) depending on your Outlook version it does not always automatically save Sent emails in to the IMAP->Sent directory. You need a rule to copy it over.

Outlook is not a very good email client. Best advice is to get all your mail onto SME and use Thunderbird.

Trying to replicate multiple Sent emails between multiple clients is probably just a disaster waiting to happen. You probably have a couple of choices.

Use a web frontend like Sogo/Roundcube.

Setup a shared folder (this is not easy) eg:

https://docs.iredmail.org/mailbox.sharing.html
https://wiki2.dovecot.org/SharedMailboxes/Shared
https://wiki2.dovecot.org/Tools/Doveadm/ACL

There is even a add-on for Thunderbird to help manage this (waiting for an update to v 60.x)

https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/imap-acl-extension/

However, you may be better off sitting down with your client and trying to rationalise out what he is trying to do, and why.

If a client sends an email and it bounces, who is going to know ?

Perhaps you should be looking at a completely different system for handling clients mail - the requirements are not straight forward.
