Well these don't look right:

2018-12-19 19:55:04257275500 6303 (init) smeoptimizer: No VirusTotal API key configured - no attachment filter enabled.

2018-12-19 19:55:33645826500 6410 Connection from Unknown [188136143.42]
2018-12-19 19:55:33.722846500 Use of uninitialized value in string eq at /usr/share/qpsmtpd/plugins/smeoptimizer line 53.
2018-12-19 19:55:33722859500 6410 (init) smeoptimizer: No VirusTotal API key configured - no attachment filter enabled.

Not sure if there is somewhere to log a bug against smeoptimizer.

How do you download from the account? fetchmail? Have you checked maillog too?

ReetP thank you for your support

i have NOT installed the fetchmail contrib as i am using: " Configuration > Email > Email Reception Settings "
E-mail retrieval mode = multi-drop
SMTP authentication   Allow both SMTP and SSMTP
ETRN or multi-drop settings = Secondary mail server ( IP ADDRESS OF SERVER )

OK, just backtracking  a little.

When did this start? Have you change anything or done anything that may coincide?

I am no guru on this, so talking out loud really, but roughly... Multidrop uses fetchmail to get your email.

It passes it through and directly injects it to the mail queue.

It hits qpsmtpd here I think:

Connection from Unknown [127.0.0.200]

You clearly use SME Optimizer:

Quote
Use of uninitialized value in string eq at /usr/share/qpsmtpd/plugins/smeoptimizer line 53

But I am not sure that is where you are falling over because we get to here:

2018-12-19 19:55:05.339951500 6303 dispatching DATA
2018-12-19 19:55:05340028500 6303 354 go ahead
2018-12-19 19:55:05.340197500 6303 spooling message to disk
2018-12-19 19:55:05341338500 6303 451 Incomplete DATA
2018-12-19 19:55:06.180107500 2506 cleaning up after 6303

So it looks like the DATA got cut off.

I'm not sure what you did with your mail log as it look a little odd.

Quote
Accepted connection 0/40 from188136143.42 / Unknown

Where does "188136143.42" come from ?

Use something like this to get time stamps:

Code: [Select]
cat /var/log/qpsmtpd/current | tai64nlocal
Then to get a specific transaction we can do say:

Code: [Select]
grep 6303 /var/log/qpsmtpd/current |tai64nlocal
Be nice to see a few of those transactions more clearly. Don't obfuscate more than you really need to please.

You can also add some logging on the fetchmail side of things:

Check:

Code: [Select]
config show fetchmail
It should be enabled. If so up the verbosity with:

Code: [Select]
config setprop fetchmail Verbosity verbose
Code: [Select]
signal-event email-update
Lets have a bit more of a look at what is going on.

i have removed SME Optimizer

Ok.
Has it made any difference?

What is in /var/log/maillog now you have verbose enabled?

It should log more detail from the fetchmail transaction??
...
1. Read the Manual
2. Read the Wiki
3. Don't ask for support on Unsupported versions of software
4. I have a job, wife, and kids and do this in my spare time. If you want something fixed, please help.

Not sure why your maillog is not more verbose.

Can you:

Code: [Select]
cat /etc/fetchmail
...
1. Read the Manual
2. Read the Wiki
3. Don't ask for support on Unsupported versions of software
4. I have a job, wife, and kids and do this in my spare time. If you want something fixed, please help.

The "Incomplete DATA" error makes me wonder:

- Is there a message sitting in the catch-all mailbox that is larger than the qpsmtpd or qmail maximum message size?
* Login to webmail, sort the list of pending messages by size, find the largest message size
* Check the various settings that affect email size limits at https://wiki.contribs.org/Email#Set_max_email_size

- Are you low on disk space?
* Check your disk free space using df -h
* If you're low (below 1GB maybe?) find a way to free up some space

I have no reason to believe that either of these situations would cause the "Incomplete DATA" error, but they both feel to me like they might not be handled gracefully.  What happens, for example, with the default SME max message size limit of about 15M if your catch-all mailbox is at gmail and someone sends you a 24M email (and the fetchmail size limit is set larger than the qpsmtpd or qmail max message size)?

As per my comments above I think we need to see what is happening with fetchmail and if it has any issues (As that is the first link in the chain)

If the messages is received OK by fetchmail we should be able to see where it goes and what it does next.

You can read up 127.0.0.1:200 in the bug tracker. To do with working with spamassassin I think.

Verbose enabled.

So what's in your maillog??

Hmmm odd. That log has all the fetchmail activity (catchall is fetched with fetchmail)

You can try 2 terminals. First run

tailf /var/log/maillog

Second

/etc/startmail  (should trigger fetchmail run)

See what happens

Very odd.

Just noticed this in your fetchmail

/usr/bin/fetchmail --syslog verbose --auth password --fetchmailrc - <<EOF

Not sure that is right. It should be --verbose

Note '--'

Can you edit /etc/fetchmail manually, and try testing again. I'm on a mobile so can't do much til later.

Have you got any custom templates for fetchmail??

Managed to login to a box and check a template.

You actually have to set the Verbosity key to --verbose

That isn't clever.

config setprop fetchmail verbosity '--verbose'

signal-event email-update

The check /etc/fetchmail shows --verbose

Do you get the buffer overflow every time you run startmail ?

"2703 messages for smemainmail@smeserver.com at 85.10.213.79 (486241238 octets)"

Really ???

Can you start over.... do any updates, signal-event post-upgrade/reboot

Then try same thing again.

How much RAM have you got as a matter of interest ?

cat /proc/meminfo

Hmmm... ugly.

No idea why you get that error.

Do you really have 2,700 + messages to collect??

So what else have you got installed that might be affecting things? Did I ask if you noted when this started?

/sbin/e-smith/audittools/newrpms

/sbin/e-smith/audittools/templates

/sbin/e-smith/audittools/repositories

...

your question
Do you really have 2,700 + messages to collect??

i have over 3300 messages to collect from the catchall account

ok, i have established that the new mail server is working perfectly.

how? by connecting to another catchall account and download all the mail

the issue is the volume of mail that i need to download

why do i keep getting
*** buffer overflow detected ***: /usr/bin/fetchmail terminated

That's the $64 million question, and most likely the reason you can't download mail.

It's unlikely a firewall issue. I believe it is some thing core to your machine.

Your maillog no longer has the full entries because you haven't enabled 'verbosity' again as above.

Nonetheless I don't think that will change unless we solve the error.

I did ask you for some server details above. Newrpms/templates etc etc.

Can you please give us that information.

Sime server history may help too. When did this start?

You said you did a fresh install, but what else did you do?? Restore? Update? Add other packages??

You need to be a bit more expansive withb your answers to try and give us a clue.

Can you also just try:

Code: [Select]
/usr/bin/fetchmail -v
Does that cause an error anywhere?
...
1. Read the Manual
2. Read the Wiki
3. Don't ask for support on Unsupported versions of software
4. I have a job, wife, and kids and do this in my spare time. If you want something fixed, please help.

ReetP

i can download mail from another catchall without any problems

however that catchall has only a few mail messages

i keep getting the following error for the old catchall mailbox

why do i keep getting the " *** buffer overflow detected ***: /usr/bin/fetchmail terminated " error?

can i increase the buffer size?

is there a way that i can download all the mail manually from the catchall mailbox, empty the catchall mailbox and then just place the mail in the " /home/e-smith/Maildir/new " folder for distribution to all the other mailbox user accounts?

Ok, so first it isn't exactly a clean install because you added a load of extra packages. Why you need to be really specific about exactly what you have done when you are debugging.

As it is I don't think any of it makes a difference.

I'm pretty sure the buffer over error is the culprit, especially as you tested another account without issues.

Question. Of those 3,000 or so mails, how much is junk and can you clean it up before trying to download?

Next? I know that fetchmail has been vulnerable to buffer overrun attacks via specially crafted mail. You can search the interwebs for "fetchmail buffer overruns" to see. A mail with the right headers can trigger an issue such as yours.

I'm thinking that this may be the case here and we may need to look at a bug for this.

It's 2 am here and I need some kip.

I'll try and take more of a look in the morning. Please don't try and mess with fetchmail settings (eg messing with buffers etc) as you may do more harm than good.

Thanks.

Well, 3300 emails are too many emails.

fetchmail by default has no limit.

you should set limits to have it to only download a bit at a time. You can eat an elephant but only a bite at a time.

according to  : http://www.fetchmail.info/fetchmail-man.html#10
Code: [Select]
-b <count> | --batchlimit <count>
  (Keyword: batchlimit)
Specify the maximum number of messages that will be shipped to an SMTP listener before the connection is deliberately torn down and rebuilt (defaults to 0, meaning no limit). An explicit --batchlimit of 0 overrides any limits set in your run control file. While sendmail(8) normally initiates delivery of a message immediately after receiving the message terminator, some SMTP listeners are not so prompt. MTAs like smail(8) may wait till the delivery socket is shut down to deliver. This may produce annoying delays when fetchmail is processing very large batches. Setting the batch limit to some nonzero size will prevent these delays. This option does not work with ETRN or ODMR.

-B <number> | --fetchlimit <number>
  (Keyword: fetchlimit)
Limit the number of messages accepted from a given server in a single poll. By default there is no limit. An explicit --fetchlimit of 0 overrides any limits set in your run control file. This option does not work with ETRN or ODMR.

would be a first way to explore.

Jean-Philippe Pialasse thank you for your help

well all i can say - IT'S WORKING!!!

all the mail messages have been downloaded from the catchall mailbox

so what did i do?

all i did was to delete all the spam messages, useless marketing mail messages etc from the catchall mailbox until i got a total of about 2200 mail messages remaining in the catchall mailbox

bam, mail starts to download from the NEW SME 9.2 Server and is distributed to all the user mailboxes ( note: i have created all the new users etc. on the NEW SME 9.2 Server )

all mail has been downloaded from the catchall mailbox and the catchall mailbox has been emptied

thank you Jean-Philippe Pialasse and ReetP for your valuable input, much appreciated.  :)
