Server won't boot up normally post update
« on: July 08, 2018, 02:16:11 AM »
Thanks ahead of time for the collective help. I recently ran the update available within this past week and upon running yum update I have not been able to boot the server naturally. After normal updates the server just restarts and all is well. Within this instance, today, it hung upon restart leaving an error message seen within the attached. If I opt to boot off of an earlier kernel (I believe this is an earlier kernel as I choose 'Server 9.2 (2.6.32-696.30.1.el6.x86_64)' as opposed to the first, and automatic, option of 'Server 9.2 (2.6.32-754.el6.x86_64)' to allow the server to boot and function) it appears fine but I fear this will eventually bite me in the end. Is there anything I can do to get ahead of future problems? Is this just a bad update? Your help is GREATLY appreciated as it always is.. Thanks again..

Seems something in the kernel disagrees with your server. At least it boots with an earlier kernel, so that's good news.

As we can't see your server...

First, a bit of detail on your server hardware please?

Next, history of your SME install... clean install/upgrade etc?

Third what customisations have you done? Contribs etc. If you say have kernel mods they may be an issue.

I'm not 100% sure this works on v9 but may be close as an idea to lock your kernel version (someone may have a better method):

There may be other stuff in the wiki/foros as I only had a brief look.
...
1. Read the Manual
2. Read the Wiki
3. Don't ask for support on Unsupported versions of software
4. I have a job, wife, and kids and do this in my spare time. If you want something fixed, please help.

might be an issue with initrd. See https://www.centosblog.com/fix-vfs-unable-mount-root-fs-unknown-block-error-centos-linux/

You are half solve it as you already boot an older kernel.
