A home Proxy server
« on: July 11, 2018, 07:52:04 AM »
Hi there in the Wide World,
Just recently I came across SME and about to set it up as a file server. Since I have spare hardware
At the risk of being ignorant, I am asking if it is possible to set up SME as a home Proxy server?
Until I hear from someone, best regards from Down Under
Cheers

Thanks, TerryF for the answer,

since there are no instructions from you, do you think a novice can do it by following the manual?
Cheers.

Have you a box/vm up and running sme server?
If yes what mode?
A description of your network setup would be a help.

HTTP proxy is on by default.

Server Only mode does not enforce the setting

Not a lot of "setting up" to do, although you might want to look at some of the contribs, the SharedFolder contrib being a particularly useful one.

and yes the wiki has a wealth of information.

If all you want is to just run a file server I think there are probably better solutions out there

Have you read this
https://wiki.contribs.org/Main_Page

SME server is really easy to use in default mode with standard available settings.
A little more work is required if you want to tailor it for specific requirements.
There are many Howtos & Contribs available for additional needs.

Proxy server is a standard enough task, what are you specifically trying to achieve ?
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.
The Search & other links to useful information are at top of Forum.

To qualify, this is due to current issues with Win 10 & file sharing. See foros & bugs.

If you run linux desktops life is still a breeze :-)

I still have SME 8 at home (never enough time to take care of my own stuff)  and several machines running Win 10 at home, and I have completely no issues with VPN, file sharing or network printing. Maybe I should not upgrade to SME 9 and just wait for SME 10 to come out :)

You should have upgraded to v9 before v8 became EOL a year and a half ago...

If you have issues with Win 10 it will affect both v8 & v9, but that depends on how you connect, and if you have updated Win 10. It is caused by M$ messing with SMB.

If you want SME v10 then please go get a copy, grab a test machine, and start playing. It won't build itself..... it needs people to help.
