Better go back to square one and tell us more abiut your server and when it started going wrong.

What version of SME?

Why did it stop sending? Did you change anything/update/install?

Have you checked any logs for errors?

Hello Sorry the server is a SME 9.2 SMTP Email using dyndns and file storage server. The problem started on Monday 28th and I had installed qmail manager to force the mail to send it seemed to work but today nothing has come through.

Thanks

We need a bit more detail than that.

Remember, we can't see your console....

SMTP Email using dyndns and file storage server.

Expand that bit with some detail please.

Exactly how is mail configured? SME as a standalone mail server or using dyndns to relay? Etc etc.

Where are your logs (snippets of errors will be good for starters)

Had you done anything prior to the 28th? Updates? Anything odd happen on the server?

If you take your time and write out a nice detailed post we might be able to help but currently about all we have is 'SME v9 email is broken'....

Im really not good at explaining things and have a limited knowledge on terminology. It is just the basic SME 9 server running the email service it comes with standard and then using forwarding dyndns through a dynamic adsl router.

Again I use SME for its simplicity and rarely have any issues

here is the basic config

POP3 server access    Allow both POP3 and POP3S
IMAP server access    Allow both IMAP and IMAPS
Webmail access    Allow HTTPS (secure)

Virus scanning    Enabled
Spam filtering    Enabled
Executable content blocking    Enabled

E-mail retrieval mode    Standard (SMTP)
SMTP authentication    Allow both SMTP and SSMTP

E-mail to unknown users    Reject
Address of internal mail server
Address of Internet provider's mail server xx.xx.xx.xx

I really appreciate the help

Same as many of us. But it shouldn't mean you don't try and learn....

Ok, so what about the logs?

They are key here. See the link I posted on how to look for errors.

Logs in here:

/var/log/messages
/var/log/qmail/* (or current)
/var/log/sqpsmtpd/* (or current)

Hello I have looked through the logs and this is the most common error that the message logs has

Emask 0x409 (media error) <F>

I didnt find anything I could pin down in the qmail logs

You can search the interwebs for that error eg:

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/48660/i-o-error-but-no-bad-block-is-reported-in-syslog#48664

Quote
"You have read errors. You can't recover from read errors by reallocating sectors: that won't make the unreadable sectors readable. You'll have to recover that part of your data from backups anyway. Better retire the disk as soon as possible"

The diagnosis is unfavourable, and the prognosis even worse.

You need to take some urgent corrective action to fix the problem.

Are you running a single disk or a mirror ?

As Stefano said, I hope you have at least one decent backup.

See if you can get another one on separate media ASAP (don't overwrite your last known good backup).

Remember, exercising the disk with intensive operations is likely to increase the likelihood of total failure/decrease the remaining lifespan of the drive.

Good luck.

Which backup method did you use?

And no backups? Oh lord....

You are almost certainly going to lose data with those read errors. Your backup may not complete, and if it does data may be lost.

One thing you might try if the backup doesn't complete properly is to try a backup of configs only. You can then build a new server, restore the configuration, and copy over whatever data you can get.

There is info on the wiki how to do it.

There is possibly another method but we'll leave that for now.

In the meantime go and buy a pair of drives and run a mirror at least. That gives you one level of protection. Backup regularly for a second, and don't use just one backup disk... get a couple and rotate them so you always keep one good one.

Might seem expensive, but then how much is this disaster going to cost you?

Keep us posted so we can help if possible.

Hello

I have a backup from February only, the dumps were stopping the pre-backup from starting and I had no warning other than  receiving a mail from cron to tell me Backup terminated: pre-backup failed - status: 256 which I missed and should have checked the backups. . I was not aware SME could have mirrored Hard drives. If any data got lost it would be pretty serious.

The error: the S20mysql-dump-tables from the pre-backup event directory, and complete your backup

which I fixed and am running a backup

The current backup works through workstation backup to a nas

thanks for the help

well.. you had some issues on your backup since february and you did not correct them?

Ok, you said in your last post you corrected them.. but your disk is dying.. As John said, your backup might be not coherent or complete

IMO, you'd shutdown your server now, take the production disk and put it on the desk.
Reinstall SME with 2 disks and then try to restore from disk.. it won't be easy but feasible
