SME 9.2 and Windows 10
« on: May 31, 2018, 12:31:02 PM »
Hi guys,

Been a while...a long while :)

I'm curious to know if anyone is running SME 9.2 with all the updates in server only mode are able to connect or at least see the server on a Windows 10 with latest updates?

I have searched and read some various bugs, how-to and forum comments and from what I can see only SME 10 seems to "support" Windows 10 viewing shares.

Would love to know your stories, problems, etc :)

Thanks!

I think fundamentally this is your answer:

https://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10580#c15

Windows 10 has removed SMB v1 support on new installs (not sure about updates - I don't run it myself... just reading others posts) which disables your ability to view shares.

SME v9 does not run SMB v2 or v3 - you need a newer version of Samba to do that (e.g Samba 4 which is in SME v10)

If you run Domain logins etc then there is this page:

https://wiki.contribs.org/Windows_10_Support

We should probably add something to that page regarding SMB support.

As I have no Windows machines ( Hurray!!!!  :pint: ) I'm not best qualified to do that.

Should have absolutely zero need to still be on it.

Chortle :-)

Well it was working.... and it will if you add the smb v1 plugin back to Windows.

Fortunately my linux desktops just keep chugging along ;-)

But the real solution is v10 + Samba 4

Generally it seems that you need to add the SMB v1 client back.

See the earlier posts and follow the links.

Possible solution from the Win 10 end.  Seems to work on Windows 10 build 1803 and higher.

Apparently from build version 1709, the SMBv1 server components are not installed by default, and the SMBv1 'Client' components (which include the Computer Browser service) are automatically removed after 15 days if the OS detects they are not being used

Simple fix is to re-enable "SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support" via the 'Turn Windows Features On or Off' dialog

I was able to see my 9.2 server and read/write to file storage directories.

As with most things this may not work for you but hope it helps

I am running a network of Windows 10 Pro workstations in a DOMAIN using updated SME 9.2 as Domain Controller.
The SME server is in gateway server mode, but it makes no difference if in server only mode (as I have done that also when Telstra cut our phone cables & a temporary reconfigure was required).

Enabling SMBv1 on workstations as mentioned in this thread is essential if you want to browse shares are per earlier versions of SME & Windows.

This opens the possibility of a significant viral exposure in Windows which has always been there in years gone by, but as end users who want to keep using SME server 9.2 we have no other choice.

Just be firm about general security of your network to prevent hackers gaining access.

You also need to apply other tweaks as mentioned & depending on the version of Windows disk you have, the process can be easier or more difficult.

I believe latest releases of Windows 10 are usable in this way with SME 9.2. Microsoft fixed some problems with earlier releases of Windows 10.

Read the threads in these forums & bugs & links to Windows support articles, all the detailed answers are there.

Ask again if you are unsure.

First step though is to get your SME server updated, as you do have a "broken" & insecure server. Your approach is a bit "head in the sand" style at present.

Thanks Janet but I have not used SME Server since September 2018 as my job role has changed and now working in a big corporate company.

Good to see the response for everyone else but I'm no longer involved with SME Server.

Good luck and all the best!

Sorry, I saw the last more recently dated post of 2019 & replied, overlooking the original was in 2018.

Anyway my answer/info is useful for others.

You need to add the Windows Feature 'SMB 1.0/CIFS,' but you also need a netbios service that gathers all the names and presents them to the network.
A 'browse master' can do this, I think. Or, if it's a small lan, a simple way is to enable the WINS service in Samba, or add it to Windows Server if you have that. WINS can produce a lot of traffic, so not good to use on large networks.

Registry tweaks + Enable SMB 1.0 and Windows 10 until 1903 release can join to domain without problem.
