Horde connection issues
« on: May 07, 2018, 02:37:27 AM »
For last couple of weeks, I been having issue with connecting to horde.
When I go to webmail page, I do see the login screen and I am able to enter my credentials.

And in server-manager log files/ messages I do see that the connection was successful:

But on my browser I keep getting connection error message:

* I did try to connect from different browsers and different machines, same result. Sometimes it connects on 2nd or 3rd try, sometimes it does not connect even after 10th try.

* Secure connection error message only happens when connecting to horde, connection to server-manager has no issues.

* I do have https://wiki.contribs.org/Horde5 contib installed for couple of years now, but this issue just started couple of weeks ago.

moved to contribs as it seems to impact only the horde 5 contrib on your server.

Is there anything specific I should be looking for in the log files? I don't see any issues in messages ( as shown in 1st post) it only shows that connection was successful. But after entering my email credentials I keep getting "Secure Connection Failed"

Possibly poor quality or erratic Internet connection.
I have seen this before where connections to webmail keep dropping out.

Possibly poor quality or erratic Internet connection.

Webmail is the only one having issues, no issues connecting to server-manager, no issues connecting to all my domains using https, no problems connecting to wordpress admin also using https.

Yes but is the location that connections to webmail are coming from, possibly using a poor quality Internet connection ?

Please comment about the people using webmail rather than other services (which wil behave differently to each other eg web access versus mail server access).

I am only sugggesting this as a possibility (that I have seen before) ie the problem being at or towards the client end of the pipe rather than the server end.

Where are you geographically located, are the users Internet connections good ?

Hi Janet

I only have a small handful of email users. All users connecting from and server is located in California.
I am able to connect (at the same time) to server-manager, https: WP-Admin, and webmail. Webmail is the only one that gives the error message.
And I am connecting from same location to same server for several years now, I am only having the issue in last couple of weeks.

Calisun,

As stated by Janet, multiple software have different behaviour even if they are all using Apache on SSL port. Some might be more tolerant to changes in connection than others, depending on the number of exchanges occurring.

As the error is very similar to another thread, what is the proxy setting of your client browser ? If auto detection is enabled, please disable it and retry.

I am not sure if this is the issue, but I have uninstalled latest contrib that I have installed:
https://wiki.contribs.org/ModDeflate

Now it seems to function OK, but it always would function better after reconfigure-reboot. So I will monitor it for few days to see how it goes.

Strange thing about ModDeflate, despite me uninstalling it, it still shows it being installed:

Code: [Select]
config show modDeflate
modDeflate=service
    level=9
    status=enabled

well this might be related

see https://dokuwiki.nausch.org/doku.php/centos:mail_c7:horde_1

I do not have horde 5 installed here, but might be some issues with double compression of content.

That just shows the config entry is left behind, which will do nothing much if the contrib is not installed.
What command did you use to uninstall it ?

To check if still installed, do:

rpm -q smeserver-mod_deflate

You can report a bug against the contrib for not removing the config details.

OK, couple of days now, and no problems now, so it was modDeflate problem.

.... but might be some issues with double compression of content.
What do you mean "double compression of content"

What command did you use to uninstall it ?
Used code as desrcribed in ModDeflate howto
https://wiki.contribs.org/ModDeflate
Code: [Select]
Uninstall
yum remove smeserver-mod_deflate

To check if still installed, do:

rpm -q smeserver-mod_deflate
Code: [Select]
# rpm -q smeserver-mod_deflate
package smeserver-mod_deflate is not installed

You can report a bug against the contrib for not removing the config details.
Done:
https://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10588

Should I also create a bug about it not being compatible with Horde 5?

I am starting to have same issue again, it stated this week out of the blue, so it looks like ModDeflate is not the issue since it is not installed any more.

In firefox I keep getting same useless message that secure connection failed, But today I tried connecting from Linux machine using Epiphany browser, and I see this message:

I have seen this before where connections to webmail keep dropping out.

I think Janet might have a good point. This server is used as an email and web server for several domains. I see that problem with email happens when the server has the heaviest web traffic.

Why the webmail is the only one that has issues? Server-manager, PHPMyadmin and wp-admin connections (all https) connect just fine.
So the question is, are there timeout settings in horde that can be adjusted? I searched this forum and only found info on how to change settings for size of attachments, but nothing on timeout. https://wiki.contribs.org/Email#Set_max_email_size

--------------
Just wanted to add that the server load is not the issue. This server has 4 Xeon processors/ 16 cores total, with 32GB memory (it is an older machine from ebay).  I can see that server load averages at 4% with top load peaks at 15%

as always, just scout your logs... the answer is likely to be there.

Why more horde than other webservice ? because this is a proxy service between you and IMAP /SMTP and mysql. It needs to auth you against IMAP, check you are still there, get your information from mysql db, and then get your IMAP content.

It depends both on IMAP availability and not being overloaded, webserver not being overloaded and mysql db not being overloaded.

Do you have some sort of bandwidth management or control on your servers Internet connection eg Qos or similar.
If not, then you should, given that server usage pattern.

To me this is where you should look (although as I do I am guessing, but experience based guesses).
You have not given anywhere near enough technical information for us to ascertain the problem.

When is the last time you updated the rpms?  I just uploaded new ones today, so you might give that a try.  I don't remember anything specific from horde that would have caused any issues.

Apparently never, you said that you uploaded new RPM's, but my server-manager told me that the system is up to date.
After searching around I found that I need to:
yum update --enablerepo=smecontribs

I am sure I did this before, but I guess I had to re-do it when upgrading to SME v9 from v8

Unless someone made some changes that I am unaware of, updates to the horde5 RPM's won't show up in server-manager, and shouldn't show up via yum either for SME9.  This is strictly a contrib for that version.  You can periodically look for the latest file updates, via in my contribs directory, http://mirror.contribs.org/contribs/jbennett.  Follow the install instructions, via the wiki, that some kind person put together, https://wiki.contribs.org/Horde5.

thanks for confirmation John,

Update:
After following John's suggestion and updating Horde, same connection issue continued.
Also as per Jean-Philippe suggestion, I looked at logs and could not see anything out of ordinary.

To me it looked like it might be a PHP issue. I had PHP-SCL contrib installed for a while now, but only changed PHP versions per i-Bay as needed. This time I have decided to change setting for http server, not just i-Bay

The setting was set to default, so I changed it to PHP71

It has been over a week and no connection issues so far.

Another update,
It has been couple of weeks after I switched http server to PHP71 and no issues at all.

Just to test, today I changed setting back to default. After re-configuring the server, I started to get the same connection issues as before.
So I changed the http server back to PHP71 and after re-configuring the server again, connections are flawless.

Not sure what is going on with default PHP, but changing it to PHP71 fixed the problem.
