Can't boot without USB
« on: July 04, 2017, 10:43:54 AM »
I installed SME 9.2 via a bootable USB. Server gets stuck in reboot loop if USB is not plugged in directly. Any ideas?
Thanks

At a guess I'd say it is looking for grub on the USB stick. No idea why or how. Does it boot correctly with the USB stick plugged in ?

Have a good search in the forums, and then the wiki and bug tracker, (I have a feeling I have seen something vaguely similar but cannot remember where) and if it is still an issue please raise a new bug.

Was the norm prior to the sme9.# iso which was a hybrid ISO image

Also saw the issue when using a HD that had been previously used as a windows system, required zeroing using
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdx bs=512 count=1
Lots of forums posts re above

Yep boots fine when USB is connected. Bootloader must have been installed on it.

If you absolutely have to fix it in place then you can update grub - there are a number of pages in the wiki about it:

https://wiki.contribs.org/Hard_Disk_Partitioning
https://wiki.contribs.org/Raid:Manual_Rebuild
https://wiki.contribs.org/Grub

In that case DON'T zap the drive - get the server booted and working first !

If you can clean reinstall I'd go back, dd the drive to make sure it really is clear and try the install again (if you can).

as noted before, it might be grub installed on wrong drive. ( in this case the content of the usb drive is still the installation disk)

or

usb drive has been added to RAID array during installation AND GRub only installed on USB disk. ( in this case the content of the usb drive has been replaced by content of your server by mirror copy)

https://wiki.contribs.org/Grub#Fix_the_GRUB_from_the_startup_command_line

should be the fix in either case.
