I thought that I would update the original thread as best I can (first link above).

PhreeBooks is a web based (multi-user), OpenSource, double-entry ERP/accounting software. It is written in PHP and runs on a MySQL server.
Multi-user Bookkeeping on your Koozali server.

I have been running PhreeBooks on my SMEserver for > 5 years (~2yrs testing- SME8/9 on an HP-ML115 behind the tele and having the kids kick hell out of it - being turned off and on by having the kettle cord brutally pulled out and reinserted and then ~3yrs production : all good so far - touches leg of chair). I am reasonably happy with PhreeBooks - it does have some drawbacks, but it has been free and MOST importantly IMHO, I own the data (unlike many 'Cloud' bookkeeping offerings - people find out too late).

BTW - it goes without saying that the '2 years of hell' testing PhreeBooks was also a glowing testament to the superb stability and robustness of SMEserver (Koozali server).

The original thread (first link at top of this post) was written at the end of my quest to educate myself about SMEserver (now Koozali Server) and PhreeBooks. I had looked at / evaluated / installed MANY bookkeeping packages. BTW this quest was all in response to my having bought a commercial Bookkeeping programme that was just awful - so I knew what I didn’t want!

Ok, the update:

Dave Primo developed PhreeBooks and having corresponded with him over a number of years I got to know him a little. He IMHO is a very talented developer, a businessman and knows about accounting.

Dave had made it clear that he ultimately wanted to monetize PhreeBooks - that was plain and underdstandable. He had put thousands of hours in over > 10 years.

About 2015 Dave launched ‘Bizuno’. A commercial, hosted and updated version of PhreeBooks. This is a hyper competitive market IMO and PhreeBooks needed a user prepared for a steep learning curve IMHO (but this is true of a lot of Bookkeeping packages). Not suited to everyone.

As Bizuno developed Dave Primo concentrated more on it and less on the OpenSource PhreeBooks. Totally understandable and in line with his ‘guidance’ to the PB community.

As DP withdrew, PB declined in popularity (Sourceforge downloads tell the story). Although there are many users - the software was good In my opinion - the community hadn’t reached the critical mass to be self-sustaining before Dave withdrew. Personally, I was saddened by this as a reasonably happy user - I saw so much effort having been squandered on a project that was now backsliding. There was only one other dev (Dutch) other than DP.

Anyway - the thing that has prompted this post - there has been a new development. Dave Primo has decided to downgrade his commitment to Bizuno from ‘commercial’ to ‘hobby’ (to use his own words). I believe that he is also in the process of releasing Bizuno to the OpenSource community.

There has been an exchange of views about the future of PhreeBooks and Bizuno on the Github pages:

Anyone using this software or otherwise interested in the project might be interested.
