Odd Backup to USB Disk Tick!
« on: March 17, 2017, 09:44:13 AM »
Hi All,

I have a couple of discs in external usb caddies. I enabled Workstation Backup to external disc. This works however if I swap the disc out that night the backup will fail.

If I then just step through the setup of Workstation Backup with exactly the same settings, with the swapped disc it works again fine. I have been doing his each time the disc is swapped.

I was about to go through the process of labelling both discs with same volume label and using the 'mounted disc' option however I don't think its good just to unplug a drive without un-mounting first.

Any tips?

Thanks for reply. I think in the past I have labelled both discs the same then used the 'mounted disc' option - but in this case the disc will be swapped by a staff member at any point during the day. This means that it wouldn't be un-mounted first before swapping.

Does this only matter if for example a backup was taking place at that time (which it wont its set for 1am)

IIRC the backup process will mount & unmount the disk, so using the same label should be fine.
I do that & it works OK for me.

With the 'mounted disc' option or external disc?

Guessing you must be using external usb disc option as you state the backup will do the mounting and un-mounting etc

My 2c: mount manually the disk, chance the label, unmount.. Let then the backup do the magic

Select the removable disk option & do not manually mount the disk.
As Stefano says, make sure the disk is unmounted from any previous manual mounting.

OK done that. In Configure Workstation Backup, when selecting 'Local Removable Disc' on the next step in Settings, the local removable disc pulldown option specifies 'nolabel' - which I have wondered about in the past. Under /media I remember seeing a dir called 'nolabel'

Should all this work without an entry in fstab?
