What is the easiest way to get a ups to work with e-smith server to shut it down when the power goes out. Thank you!

Save yourself some trouble.  Use APC UPS's and download the following contrib from Darrell May's site.

Hi,

I have bought lastly the APC Back-UPS CS500 with a USB cable and I use 5.5 SME version.

I read that the 5.5 with kernel 2.2.x doesn't work with USB UPS version.

Can you tell me if you have a suggestion to put it them with a 2.2.x kernel version with my UPS? Apcupsd seem working with only a serial cable.

Can you think if I type /dev/ttyUSB'x' will working? (I will be test perhaps).

I don't have the chance to change my UPS, it's not returnable.

Thanks for your information.

Hi - I haven't managed to get it working with USB but there is an adapter cable available to convert to serial. Look in the user guide on the cd and you will get the APC part number. I am waiting for mine to arrive.
Good luck
Brian
