Plan your migration of SME Server 8.x to 9.x [SME 8.x End of Life 2017/03/31]

guest22

Hi all,

SME Server 8.2 has just been released. However, please keep in mind that EOL of SME Server 8..x will be coming soon (2017).

So as a heads up and anticipating on the release cycle of SME Server 9.x, please prepare you migration plans for migrating from 8.x to 9.x. (or any previous version like 7.x)

Looking at our history and activity, an actual migration of your SME Server 8.x in the first or second quarter of 2016 would be advised.

So start prepping ;-)

edit:adding date of EOL.

Need a spare 64bit machine first as I don't want to migrate to 32bit SME9. Thanks for the remainder though.

Apologise if my quick search skills are somewhat lacking...

Will there be an 'upgrade path' from 8.x to 9.x or is it a case of starting from scratch?

Thanks!

Just in case anyone else browsing this...

"In-place upgrades to SME 9.x using yum or CD are not supported due to design constraints imposed by CentOS. It is necessary to backup the old server & then restore to the new server. Contribs will need to be reinstalled."

SME Server 9.0 is based on CentOS 6.5 - the EOL of which is as follows ;

As a cautionary, please have a look at : http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9130 as it could impact migration plans going from sme8.2 to sme9.0_64

Most certainly, to date without an issue. See the bug you referenced.

Bump.

Please be aware of the deadlines of EOL. Please prepare and schedule enough time for test migrations.

the official date for the end of upstream, and our support is  2017/03/31.

Be prepared.

You can usually easily migrate by:
  • backup your SME 8 using an external drive
  • disconnect the drive
  • install SME server 9
  • when asked for restoration  (and not before or you might lose the content of your drive as it might get incorporated in the raid!!), plug your drive and proceed to restoration
  • resintall your contribs.

of course do a test on a spare machine or virtual machine first to check everything is ok, or take the opportunity to upgrade your hardware with a new machine.

*FINAL WARNING* SME 8.x End of Life 2017/03/31
« Reply #11 on: March 18, 2017, 12:38:43 PM »
As per earlier warning. SME Server 8.x series will reach EOL as per March 31, 2017. After this date you are on your own if you continue to use any version of SME Server prior to SME Server 9.x. This includes, regular updates and most importantly, security updates.

The SME Server stream follows EOL dates set by upstream (RedHat/CentOS), so no more updates or changes will be published. Basically, if you stay at the SME Server 8.x series, you are at a dead end.

March 21, 2017.

With the release of SME Server 8.2 on Nov 04 2015 it was announced
that the upstream project, CentOS 5, was nearing End of Life. Today the
SME Server updates team is again announcing that SME Server 8 will
reach End of Life on Mar 31 2017 after which we will no longer provide
any support for SME Server 8 and it will be considered obsolete.

This means from Mar 31 2017
- No further updates will be released
- No security updates will be released
- The SME 8 release will be moved into the "obsolete" tree on the mirrors
- Existing SME Server 8.X bugs will be closed with WONTFIX
- The SME Server 8.X bug category will be closed for bug entry

If you have not already upgraded to SME 9, you should do so immediately.
SME Server 9.1 is the current stable release. (SME Server 9.2 soon to be released)

The SME Server team is working on releasing SME Server 10, it is currently in Alpha and there is no planned release date currently. Please consider supporting its development http://smeserver.org/donate

With SME8 going EOL this also has implications for upstream repos as CentOS has now archived the CentOS 5 repo tree.

See below for details for reconfiguring CentOS base and updates repositories for SME8 if needed.
