Affa sme9 to backup SME8.1
« on: August 06, 2015, 03:57:28 PM »
Hello,

I have 2 SME8.1 : the first for production and the second for backup (with affa).
I have read that affa on SME8 don't work as expected.

If I reinstall my backup server with SME9 and Affa, is that it will work properly with my SME8.1 (or do I have to reinstall the SME8.1 too) ?

Thank you.

As far as I know it will work just fine.

I have exactly that situation and it works very well. No problems in 18 months.

Server is SME 8.1
AFFA Server is SME 9.0

Go for it.

Cheers

sme 9

a good way to update to SME9 from SME8 - I've done it at least 6 times.

It's very interesting and it totally concerns me.
Here is my situation:
I have an old SME8 server that just crashed (I think it's hardware, I have not seen the machine yet).
I have a small SME9 affa backup server which saved it.
This is the opportunity to upgrade the SME8-> SME9.

I am going to buy a new server to replace the old one that is broken and I want it in production with all its configuration in SME9.

What is the best scenario if they're both possible ?  :?
1 / Make a "affa restore" from the SME9 affa on the new fresh empty SME9
2 / Make a USB backup of my SME9 affa ; make a usb restore to my new SME9 -> the new SME9 is now a affa . Make a "rise" on the new SME9 to go into production.

Thanks for yours tips !

I have an additional question for affa: I wanted to find in the affa backup files the PAT config of my down SME8.
The config file is /etc/rc.d/init.d/masq. But I do not find it in /var/affa/backup-smeserver/daily.0/
Is this normal? Will this setting be restored by the affa?
In fact, what settings are saved by the affa?

PS : if i must create another topic for this additional question, say it to me.

Masq is template generated.

As to your restore scenario, tricky one!

Can you 'rise' the backup server?

if your SME9 can hold the old SME8 data, go for a rise there, then setup the new SME9, install affa on it, backup the "small" one on the new one, do a rise on the new one..
this is the simplest way and the one that will give you the shortest downtime..

did it some times using a VM on my laptop as a "bridge" (when you can't afford a long downtime and don't have a new hw)

First of all, thank you for yours answers.  :-P
In fact, I forgot to mention that the servers are 400km away and that I want to do all the operations during one day (to avoid several trips or hotel nights).  :-?
In my situation : I don't need a shortest downtime : the SME8 server is down and I have a workaround.

Yes, the small affa SME9 can do a rise but I have to add first a another network card (it has only one and the SME8 is a gateway server). On the other hand it will be very slow (small processor and very few RAM). So, I'm afraid that the stefano solution of is too long to hold in 1 day (I have 1.2To data around). I'm agree it is the simplest way for lots of situation but not for mine. It would be perfect if the servers were next to me :(  :-(

That's why I was thinking more about the second solution: I can launch the USB backup before (a remote person can connect the USB drive).
On D-Day, I only have to restore the USB disk and then do a "rise".

Is that correct?

@ReetP : thanks for the information for masq

We have to be sure that the "local" usb backup will backup and restore the affa related data, I am not sure that this is the case - can someone confirm / deny?
