Topic: CopyFromDisk - Does it work to upgrade from SME Server 8 to SME Server 9?

I've used CopyFromDisk may times in the past to recover from failures and to upgrade to new server hardware.

Will it work moving to SME 9?  Searching the forum did not illuminate the answer.

AFAIK no, upgrade to SME 9 only as per http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:9.0#Upgrading

Simplest method, Backup SME8 to USB from the console, new install of SME9, during install on being asked to you want to restore from backup do so, now install any contribs you were using and are SME 9 compatible, test all functionality, you are away and running.

You can also use the inbuilt backup functionality from the server manager however it then requires the restore in SME 9 being done from the server manager, just adds complications.

I do not agree that UpgradeDisk cannot be used with sme9, although I have not tried it.

The UpgradeDisk method is not really physically upgrading a disk, it is a Backup & Restore procedure, so therefore it does fit the process required to upgrade to sme9.
It is simply avoiding the need to do a backup first, as it reads the mysql details (after a dump achieved with the pre-restore command on the old server before shutdown) & the settings & data directly from the attached old drive, rather than doing a backup first. It is in effect doing a Restore from the "fake Backup".

Theoretically it should work, but there may be issues with lvm & so on, similar perhaps to the steps for sme8, see article.
Maybe that same info for sme8 is applicable to sme9, or maybe the issue simply does not exist with sme9 as it has a similar structure to sme8.
Maybe the Howto needs tweaking re mdadm & lvm & so on.
I have not tried it myself (going to sme9 using the UpgradeDisk method) so cannot say for sure, but by my reckoning it theoretically should be possible.

To sonoracomm, I would say, Give it a go, & let us know the outcome.

Will do.  I've used this method _many_ times before and it is my preferred method when possible.
