You really need to check the motherboard, chipset & CPU to see they are compatible with CentOS
For sme8.1 = CentOS 5.10

You should also really assess that the new hardware will be OK with sme9, as that has been released already & users should start upgrading to sme9 = CentOS 6.5

Go to the CentOS web site & look up HCL hardware compatibility list, & ask your supplier re compatibility, they should be able to tell you.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

If You like HP, Proliant is your bet choice for a server; furthermore they're usualy 100% compatible with RedHat/Centos/ESXi.
In my last install I focused myself on ESXi 5.5 using one or more SME virtualized.
Maybe they're cheaper than a Workstation-Class PC.

I checked the Red Hat Certificated Hardware, and HP xw4400 Workstation is certificated for version 5.1 so I think SME 8.1 will run OK on this machine?

As for SME 9 I don't know what do say, maybe it would be best not to hurry myself and find a machine that will allow me to upgrade to SME 9 later?

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

Yes I agree.

There are many advantages to move to sme 9, all development will be focussed on sme9, nothing new will happen for sme 8.x.
We just have to wait for any add on contribs you may use to be released, but the sme 9 server OS is OK to use now.

Orest, I strongly suggest you to buy a "server" machine, not a "workstation" one..

I agree with Stefano - none of the above. Buy a server class machine. A lot of people here seem happy with the HP microservers.

Hello,

Thank you all for the replays!

I found a HP Prolinat ML110 G5, I checked the HP certified CentOS list of hardware this machine does not exist in the list of HP, maybe cuz it is old.
Meanwhile in RHEL certificated Hardware, ML110 G5 is certificated only for Server 5.x .

The cost of this machine is $250.
Should I buy?

Thank you

Yes ML110 G5 is hardware from circa 5 years ago.
My advice is to follow Janet's recommendations in post 2 & purchase a server which is compatible with SME 9.

Hi,

OK I will search for microservers.

I am a student, and I want the server as Home Server, for the Degree Project. It won't have more than 5 users. So basically, for the moment I need a machine to learn and to practice the about SME, and if I get skilled with this software, I have plans to implement it in a hosting company in Albania, where I work.

Thank you all,

With Respect,
Orest

so all you need is a hw to make some experiments..

well, I think you don't need a real server in this case but even a old pc with at least 1Gb ram will work..
use it as your "production" server

for every kind of deep test, use virtual machines..

You are *very strongly* advised to ensure that you have two hard drives bound in a RAID1 pair.
