Your own experience should be enough - 'yum remove' wants to remove lots of packages which you don't want removed. 'rpm -e ...' will remove only the packages you name.

If there's a dependency somewhere, rpm -e will also refuse to remove, unless you also add --nodeps (which I wouldn't recommand....)
