SME Server 8.1 Beta 1 Release Announcement
« on: October 02, 2013, 08:15:09 AM »
SME Server 8.1 Beta1 Release Notes

30 September 2013

The SME Server development team is pleased to announce the release of
SME Server 8.1 Beta 1 which is based on CentOS 5.9

Bug reports and reports of potential bugs should be raised in the bug
tracker (and only there, please);

    http://bugs.contribs.org/

About SME Server

SME Server is the leading Linux distribution for small and medium
enterprises.

SME Server is freely available under the GNU General Public License and
is only possible through the efforts of the SME Server community.
However, the availability and quality of SME Server is dependent on
meeting our expenses, such as hosting costs, server hardware, etc.

As such, we ask for a small donation to offset costs and fund further
development.

Please visit http://wiki.contribs.org/Donate to donate.

Thanks and a plea for help

The development team would like to thank all of those who have involved
themselves with this release.

Notes
------

1. CentOS 5 has dropped support for i586 and therefore SME Server 8.1
will not work on i586 hardware. [See bugzilla:2845]. i586 hardware
   means processors before and including Intel Pentium, Pentium MMX;
   AMD K5, K6, K6-II, K6-III and Via C3. i686 architecture processors
are Intel Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium III; AMD Athlon,
   Athlon XP and later.

2. Some notes on SME 8.1 including help on upgrades can be found at
   http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server_8

3. Please note it may take up to 48 hours for mirrors to finish syncing,
during this time you may experience problems.
   You can download SME8.1 from
   http://mirror.contribs.org/smeserver/releases/testing/8/iso/i386/
or for other methods see http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server_8

Changes in this release

Packages altered by Centos, Redhat, and Fedora-associated developers are
not included.

Backups
-------
- Workstation Backup allows the day of the week to be specified on which a full backup occurs. This now works correctly for all days of the week.
- To increase reliability of backups to a Microsoft Vista drive, a one second delay was added to the backup.
- Allow user setting of compression level for Desktop and Console Backups.
For example: config setprop backupconsole CompressionLevel -6
The default is -6, where -1 is fastest and -9 is optimal compression.
- In the console, under item 8, refer to removable media instead of USB device.
- After a restore from the console the post-upgrade event was not being performed.
- Add an option to use Wake on LAN before starting Workstation Backup.
- Workstation Backup, report cifs mount errors.
- Workstation Backup, be compatible with destinations that include spaces.
- Workstation Backup, remove temporary directory on success .
- Workstation Backup, add a choice to delete old backup before or after backup.

File Server
-----------
- Add support for Windows 8 domain joining & user login with a new registry file.
  /server-resources/regedit/win8samba.reg
- New optional samba property smb{WideLinks}, valid values are 'no' or 'yes'. The current samba default is 'no'.
  see http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/manpages-3/smb.conf.5.html#WIDELINKS
For example to enable samba Wide Links
  # config setprop smb WideLinks yes
- Add windows network performance enhancements registry file that can help Windows slow logons.
  /server-resources/regedit/windows_samba_performance.reg
- Two new optional samba properties smb{ServerMaxProtocol} & smb{ClientMaxProtocol}.
For example: # config setprop smb ServerMaxProtocol NT1
- Remove the samba_audit specific logrotate configuration which was causing an email to be sent to the admin every night.
- Enable smb auditing per ibay, it is disabled by default.
  Auditing is enabled via
  # db accounts setprop ibayname Audit enabled
  # signal-event ibay-modify ibayname
- Prevent emailing about the normal, weekly, checks of RAID arrays
- Update ServerName (Samba netbios name) when SystemName is updated
- Workaround a deficiency in the proftpd package where it does not handle long lines correctly in its configuration file. This caused FTP to fail when large numbers of local networks were configured.
- Ensure Deny from all is on its own line in 15LimitLOGIN

LDAP (Optional in SME 8.1, and considered experimental)
----
- Fix init-account script when LDAP auth is enabled.
- Fix group creation/modification when LDAP auth is enabled.
- The ldap.init script which starts just after the ldap service waits for slapd to be to available. The logic to check if slapd is ready was corrected.
- Add missing dependency on openldap-servers.
- The ldap log files can take significant space on servers with a lot of users. This update will ensure old BDB log files are removed.

Localisation
------------
- Latest translations included.

Mail Server
-----------
- Fetchmail multidrop mode follows TCPPort setting.
- Avoid use of unitialised variables in smtp migrate fragments.
- Allow smtp_auth_proxy to use port 587 with STARTTLS.
- Due to SMTP servers not handling SMTP Auth well enable the use of a blacklist to remove the troublesome methods.
  For example to remove CRAM-MD5:
  # db configuration setprop smtp-auth-proxy Blacklist CRAM-MD5
  # sv t /service/smtp-auth-proxy
More than one method can be removed:
  # db configuration setprop smtp-auth-proxy Blacklist "CRAM-MD5 DIGEST-MD5"
  # sv t /service/smtp-auth-proxy
- imap-relocate-maildirs action was removed. It was no longer necessary and was sometimes very slow.
- The soft memory limits for pop3 and pop3s were increased. Two new optional database properties pop3{MemLimit} and pop3s{MemLimit}
For example to increase the memory limit
  # config setprop pop3s MemLimit 50000000
  # expand-template /var/service/pop3s/env/MEMLIMIT
  # config setprop pop3 MemLimit 50000000
  # expand-template /var/service/pop3/env/MEMLIMIT
- New optional qmail property qmail{ConcurrencyLocal} and default for /var/qmail/control/concurrencylocal changed to 20.
For example to decrease the local concurrecny limit
  # config setprop qmail ConcurrencyLocal 6
- Modify domain style pseudonym pointing to user with dot in name.
- Accept messages with no body and no trailing \n after headers.
- Prevent email delivery failure with required updates for perl-Net-DNS and qpsmtpd.
- New optional spamassassin property spamassassin{MaxMessageSize} to allow for spamassassin qpsmtpd's plugin size limit to be changed.
For example to also scan larger files
  # config setprop spamassassin MaxMessageSize 1500000
- Make CipherSuite secure by default and tls ciphers defaults to disallow SSLv2.
- Fix how qpsmtpd tags spam email.
- Add template to extend the functionality of SSL verified certificate to IMAP and SSMTP transactions
- Update ClamAV to release 0.97.8.
- Load TextCat plugin if ok_languages is enabled.

Server manager
--------------
- Do not load mod_ssl for httpd-admin as it is not needed and creates log noise.
- If the browser used to access the server-manager used lower case for %escapes a blank screen would be shown. The server manager URL processing is now case-insensitive for %escapes.
- Fix more uninitialized warnings in log (httpd/admin_error_log) from HTML.pm.
- Remove log noise (httpd/admin-error-log) when accessing the Create Starter Web panel in server-manager

Webmail and Groupware
---------------------

- If IMAP is disabled in the server manager email panel, IMAP will now listen to the loopback interface to allow webmail to function.
- Webmail no longer uses SSL over loopback interface.

Web Server
----------
- Disable index listing of Apache icons folder.
- PHP's magic_quotes are deprecated so should no longer be used. The php.ini will now have "magic_quotes Off" instead of fully removing it as the default is ON.
- Change wording of Software Update button.

Other fixes and updates
-----------------------
- Remove old System Name from the Hosts DB
- Fix warning in /var/log/messages by correctly initialising the relevant variable. The warning related to the HW Address of a NIC.
- user-modify-unix script could take many minutes, it has now been optimised to take only seconds
- The memory limit for pppoe was increased to 100Mb.
- On upgrading from SME Server 7 to SME Server 8 an email could be sent to the admin everyday due to a modified /etc/updatedb.conf file. This update ensures the correct /etc/updatedb.conf file.
- Updated SME root server template as D-root changed its IPv4 address on the 3rd of January.
- The console would crash when no value is entered as static gateway in servergateway(-private) mode. Improved error-checking in isValidIP() prevents this.
- Use file locking to make sure that only one copy of the masq script is running at any particular time.
- Add python-hashlib so we can read newer repodata signatures.
- Point mirrorlist to mirrorlist.contribs.org
- Increase memory limit for ntpd .

General features
================

- Based on CentOS 5.9 and all available updates

Hi Guys

Did you know that the 8.1 beta 1 update is now included in the regular updates?
This morning I checked my email with my sleepy head and saw that there was a major update for my SME Server.
I directly updated my server and because they where all so small the update process was fast so I decided to update the 2 other servers that I monitor.
When I updated the last server i noticed 8.1 beta 1 passing by in my Putty screen!
I remember thinking: Owww Sh!@#$%t, I just updated 3 production 8.0 servers to 8.1 beta 1 servers!
Then I started checking the servers update settings and "SME Server - updates testing" was NOT selected!
Doesn't that mean I should not have gotten the 8.1 beta 1 update with my regular updates?

On the bright side, my server's mail still works, my webmail is reacheable and my websites are still available.  8-)  :D
The other 2 servers also seem to work fine and that is way better than I expected from a beta 1!

Here is the update notification that my server send me that does not show in any way that the 8.1 beta 1 update was included in there:

SME Server 8.1beta1 is an update of the first iso launched in may 2012, since there are more than 250MB of updates.

As this will be our iso installer it needs to be tested. Please take a CDROM with over-burning option activated or a DVDROM and play with this ISO to test the product.
A know issue is that the iso is too big to be burned without the option over-burning. see http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7864

Please report all bugs to bugzilla.

Happy testing.

I've noticed this too and I believe beta's and testing should *NOT* be mixed with production servers and update processes of production servers at a stable level, either minor or major upgrades. An update is *NOT* and upgrade!

There are many stable SME 8.0 production servers out there and probably with a 'only stable versions' strict corporate policy.

IMHO enforcing production servers updating to beta versions is a _*huge*_ flaw

Very disappointing, and it will cause many decision makers think again and review the stability of the SME Server organization and their un-announced production impacting decisions.

The right direction is bugzilla but as i can see now it is only the package  smeserver-release    noarch   26:8.1-0.beta1.el5.sme     which is in smeupdates.

it seems to me that all updates are tested and verified updates

I cannot login in to bugzilla.
But might I suggest if possible.
First there will always be bugs and issues.
If there are no big issues or bugs.
Turn the beta into 8.1 and work on 8.2
This way you can be done with it, even if it is not likable.
Mistakes happen. Over all the years. Few major mistakes.
Just move on if possible.

I suppose you have asked to create an account different from the forum account ?
If i remember well for each component of this website you have to create an account different.

Don't hesitate to come to bugzilla, more we are to test or to debug, more we are to make this distro better.

You need to create a new account in bugzilla, which is seperate/different from your Forum & Wiki login.
The login name MUST be a valid email address.
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.
The Search & other links to useful information are at top of Forum.

Hello@ALL

thanks for adding 8.1beta into 8.0 this breaks my Servers!
Testing wasn't selected, after update and reboot the new Kernel boot into FREEZE!

This is not what happened. The 8.1beta is due to the wrong smeserver-release package being released - that package would not break the server it only changes the text.
The actual contents of what went to 8.0 updates went through the same release process as usual. Including the kernel update from upstream that had nothing to do with the incorrect smeserver-release package.

You have raised Bug 7910 for this, let's continue there.

Hello wellsi,

thanks for reply, i agree but the users (often Linux-Newbies not IT-NERDS) must see a Console Warning if a system is set to "8.1beta" perhaps a Dialog Screen with YES/NO

thats may be correct & fair..

There is no intention to deliver Beta content to production servers. Sadly the mistake with the release string was specifically from trying to avoid what actually happened. It has spooked people and I can understand that, so I hope to have a resolution to the server string soon.

Then on the kernel issue I've updated the bug.

Your server was not updated to 8.1beta.

You can very easily return to the previous smeserver-release package for 8.0, if the 8.1beta1 text display status bothers you.

rpm -e --nodeps smeserver-release
yum install smeserver-release --disablerepo=smeupdates
signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event reboot

Your server manager will show sme 8.0 then.

Quote
Testing wasn't selected, after update and reboot the new Kernel boot into FREEZE!
http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7910

Which is very likely a hardware related or hardware compatibility issue, probably relating to your chipset.

Quote
think about to change OS to freebsd..cause this isn't funny..

You are seriously over reacting. The beta1 label is cosmetic only, the packages updated are the normal sme8.0 updates, and NOT the sme8.1beta updates.

Quote
I dont want to donate money if beta Kernels set as stable! This waste my time!

The kernel update comes from upstream CentOS sources & is beyond the control of sme server devs.
All admins should really test even official updates first, before applying them to production servers.
You need to do your job more carefully & ensure there are no compatibility issues with your hardware.

Quote
PLEASE DONT MAKE the same ERRORS like M$, Ubuntu + SAMBA4.0!  DONT SET TESTING to STABLE!

Your conclusions are not correct, the only minor error was that the smeserver-release beta package was released as a regular update, which changes the text in server manager etc, so of cosmetic concern only. All the updated packages were stable tested sme8.0 updates only. I think there was an error or bug in the initscripts package also, which is minor.

This has currently been sent for testing as it should cure the release string. At the moment I cannot advise installing this on any server until the testing is completed.

I think that is not our fault, you should see the redhat project :p
think about to change OS to freebsd..cause this isn't funny..

I dont want to donate money if beta Kernels set as stable! This waste my time!

PLEASE DONT MAKE the same ERRORS like M$, Ubuntu + SAMBA4.0!  DONT SET TESTING to STABLE!
Just for my own information, how do you spent for the project this month, from my part between my monthly donation and the server i manage for the project (aubrac-medical.fr) i have spent 54€, and i'm still smiling .

Do you think when you are explaining how people can remove the donate paypal button of the server-manager is a good thing, that you have done a GREAT step for the community.....I DO not think so. (see link above in google+)

This your word i can read

Remove the Paypal Button on Login Page of 8.1:

....

what a trash..cause the Community does 90% of the work..bug tracking, error reporting, error cleaning..

This project is done for people who want to help other, to work together, to share their skill or their money when they can, but not for people who are only able to read bugzilla report and explain how you can remove a string in a rpm.

I'm really disappointed and i hope you will have more success with freebsd, i can recommend FreeNAS or Nas4free if really you have a problem with money.

May I respectively suggest that Thomas has lost all rights to ask a question and get an answer, at least a polite one..a tamperer (has more meaning than what it at first appears  :-P ).

The update to resolve the display version has been released.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SME Server Update Notification
2013-10-17
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Name        : smeserver-release
Product     : SME 8
Version     : 8.1
Release     : 0.beta1.1.el5.sme
URL         : [(none)]
Summary     : SME Server release file
Description :
e-smith server and gateway release file
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update Information:

After the updates released on 30th September 2013 the version displayed on
SME 8 servers was incorrectly shown as 8.1 Beta 1. The smeserver-release package
was removed from the mirrors and this update now corrects the version text to
show SME Server 8.0 again.

The actual functionality of the server was not affected but understandably there
was concern at seeing a Beta tag appearing on our stable release.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ChangeLog:

* Sun Oct 16 2013 Ian Wells <esmith@wellsi.com> 8.1-0.beta1.1
- Update to correct the displayversion for 8.0 servers
