Mail Problems

guys please help

i need advice on what to do about the following
using SME 8 Server

1. I need to Make a Backup of ALL User Emails and if Required Restore an Individuals emails back on the SME 8 Server. What would you recommend i use to accomplish this.

2. Sometimes the SME 8 Server does not " send " email out. I only know about this after about two days when a client complains that none of his clients has received any emails. How do I know in advance if there is a problem with smtp etc. I need to be alerted about this. What do i do??

3. My client also complains that some of his users do not receive all mail that was sent from there client's. ie. If say i send a mail message to user1, when i phone user1 and ask about my message user1 says that he has not received it even if i sent the same message three times. Where and how in the SME 8 server can I check what emails were delivered to whom and how can i sort this out??

any help greatly appreciated  :)

1. Backups -
* You can configure your SME server to keep a copy of all emails
* You can configure Affa to keep snapshot backups of your server.
* You could configure Imapsync to sync each user's mailbox with another server or mailbox on a regular basis
* You could use the built-in backup function in server-manager.
* You could use a combination of the above - for example you could keep copies of all emails, but delete the copied emails whenever you have a successful backup.  Comprehensive restore would then involve restoring the mailbox from backup and copying over the emails not included in the backup from the bcc/archive account.

2,3:
You will need to review the server's log files from the time of the failed emails to figure out what's up.  Here are some pages that may help:

It's difficult to see how you have justified that assertion.
OTOH if you can justify it then you should probably file a bug.

Check the qmail/current log for your apparently 'unsent' message
and, if it shows something like "Remote_host_said:_250__" then
your SME *DID* send the msg but the remote organisation's
stuff messed up the actual delivery to your client or your
client messed it up themselves but are lying or don't know.

Probably should rely (privately) on the built-in competence
of your SME more than any of that exhibited by your clients;-)
