Backup advice
« on: August 08, 2013, 09:26:29 AM »
On 7.x series we used to have the following situation;

2 x External USB hard discs - these where swapped each night and one taken off site to comply with our insurance policy / quality control etc

Each disc would hold 7 days ful / entire backups

How can I replicated this on 8.x ?

Thanks!

The same way you did it in sme7.x !

You need to tell us more info & ask a more specific question.
Did you use the default backup to workstation (to local USB) or did you install some other contrib eg DAR2 or Affa ?

Using the backup to ws snap-in to an external USB disc - I can select 1 backup set and 7 days

However this will fail as soon as the disc is swapped because the catalogue is on the other
disc :(

Obviously !

You need to reconfigure the workstation backup settings & do another full backup on the second disk, & then changed back to daily incrementals.

You will have to go through that procedure again at the end of the week.
So I question you, is that really the identical way you had backup configured on sme7.x ?

Also using the disk swapping method you suggest with the backup to workstation on a weekly (or whatever period) cycle, you will have restore issues, as the daily swapped disks will not have sequential backup part numbers eg disk 1 will have parts 1,3,5, & disk 2 will have parts 2,4,6

How did you really have it set up on sme 7.x ?

Now I have upgraded to 8 I cant tell what settings I had. But I know what used to happen. We had two discs, swapped daily, with days worth of dar files on them. Swapping them was never an issue, and the backup sets where full, with the days date included in the file name. Can the same be done on 8?

Perhaps you were doing a full backup every day (& not doing daily incrementals), so if that's the case then change the settings in the workstation backup config.

If I set ;

Number of rotating backup sets 7 Daily backups in each set 1

would this result in 7 complete backups in seperate directorys containing one days full backup?

Could I swap discs without issue?
