Connectivity after updates
« on: July 30, 2013, 11:16:56 PM »
-- PowerEdge T110 --
We are running SME 8.0 on a Dell PowerEdge T110. On July 26, I installed the updates listed below. Upon rebooting, I could not connect to the server, couldn't even ping it. So, I hooked a monitor to it and found out that through the update process and rebooting, the IP address was changed to an IP not even on our network (I didn't record the IP, I don't remember what it was). I logged in on the admin account and changed the IP to what we had it on and rebooted. Ever after that, all I've had is headaches. I have re-installed SME 8.0 3 times (not an upgrade, a fresh install) and still am having issues. There is only intermittent connectivity. I can usually ping it now, but then there are times where I can not putty in to it, can't get in through web admin and can't map any windows networks to it. The main message I get when trying to connect a network is: An error occurred while reconnecting K: to \\192.168.75.214\gt\files Microsoft Windows Network: The local device name is already in use. This connection has not been restored.  At times it almost seems that if my computer which is listed as an admin in 'users' is connected all others are locked out. I have used different ethernet cables, connected straight in to the router, and nothing seems to change. I am almost concluding it is a network card problem, but I had no problems (ABSOLUTELY NONE) before updating with these updates. Can anyone tell me what has happened or is happening? I am stumped.

I have re-installed SME 8.0 3 times (not an upgrade, a fresh install) and still am having issues. There is only intermittent connectivity.

Re what you said above you would presume it is not due to the update, which then suggests other problems, your thought it may be a network card problem might be the definitive answer.

Why now? on reboot hardware is cycled, can throw up issues with things on the cusp of a problem.

Good Luck

[some random thoughts...]

I don't have any SME servers running the PAE kernel, and I found some notes online that the PAE kernel is incompatible with some video drivers.  Perhaps it is also incompatible with some network drivers?  Did your fresh installs use the PAE kernel?

Have you got another network card you can stuff in for diagnostics?

I found a post on the Centos forums about a Dell PE T110 server - that user found that Centos 5 wouldn't install correctly, but vmware esxi worked fine (his problem turned out to be a processor/centos conflict - but he had a celeron processor, not a xeon).  Anyway - does your hardware all work fine if you install vmware esxi (that is, is there a centos driver compatibility issue you're dealing with)?

I am not an expert with SME so to tell you if PAE kernel was part of the fresh install I can't. Most of what I do is through the web server-manager and a few basic commands in Putty.

As to another network card, I don't have one to plug in, unfortunately. One other comment, we had another Dell Server with SME 8.0 on it, that is basically a backup, (I just haven't put our data on it yet because I was wanting to get this one going) and I booted it up, and ran Colasoft Ping Tool http://www.colasoft.com/ping_tool/on the network to see how the connection was, and it purrs along no problem, so I think it must be the NIC.

Just thought I'd leave an update here about my problem. After trying everything I knew, and running three updates that the Dell technician had me run, (BIOS update, NIC card update and the BMC motherboard firmware update) and it still didn't work, the Dell technician sent out a new motherboard. Problem fixed!

Hi, from your update list you can see that  kernel-PAE.i686     2.6.18-348.12.1.el5     smeupdates will be updated, which indicates that PAE kernel was installed and that your machine has 4 GB or more  RAM.

Anyway, to fix the problem I do suggest to login to your console as admin user and reconfigure the server to original configuration.

Regards,

Miro
