Problem installing SME 8 on HP Proliant Microserver
« on: January 25, 2013, 04:50:03 PM »
I'm having a problem with a Microserver N40L in that I run the install and everything seems to go fine until I get to the prompt to reboot. I remove the install media and OK the reboot. As the server comes back on the hard drive light gives one quick flicker and then the system reboots itself, It will then sit there rebooting over and over. Am I missing something simple here or is this machine incompatible?

I've tried installing with the hard drive set in RAID mode, AHCI Mode and IDE mode and it does the same thing each time. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Hi Zippy28

The HP N40L is a good machine, perfect for SME.
You probably have a faulty one. Try installing anything else on it and it should misbehave as well.

I had a similar experience with one (I have two and have recommended them before) and it was replaced immediately by the supplier.....that was the only hiccup in nearly two years experience with them.

SME should just run out of the box on it.

Take it back.

Cheers
Ian

I have at least 4 N40L running SME8... no problems at all.

I also bet you've a BAD HW! Ask for a replacement NOW!

Try booting it with some other distro, like Partedmagic. If that works it is worth investigating.

What is your drive configuration? 1 or 2 drives ?

Do not use BIOS RAID, use AHCI.

I have problems with the SME default RAID1, which needs time to sync. It is not considered a bug.
Can you test/reinstall with only one HD installed?

I'm also using an N40L. It's been a great little box. I didn't come across this problem durring install but I remember durring the install process it took forever to load with Raid1. I did several reinstalls thinking something was wrong. I then did the install with one drive. It worked perfectly. I then added the second drive and got it to mirror (using SME software mirror). This took about a day to mirror, even though there wasn't a lot of data on the machine. It's been humming along since.

Maybe just try and install with only one drive? then add the other in later. (that's if you are using 2 drives)

Can only add to other comments, have an N40L, have used a memory stick on the internal USB, a SSD on internal USB, and currently have two 500gbs in a raid 1 with the OS and 2tb as a data drive, never had a problem with any install or reinstalls as I stuff things up experimenting :-).

Ditto here, have 8 x N40 in production, all loaded perfect.  Could be a drive problem. Do not use BIOS RAID, use AHCI.

I have another N40L which is running Windows Server 2012 without a problem. I took the hard disks out of this and tried installing SME 8 onto fresh HDDs on this and got the same result. The install goes fine but then on reboot it only boots for about a second before rebooting itself.. This is the first time I've ever had problems installing SME but I'm now having the same problem on 2 Servers with the same hardware.

I have managed to install Ubuntu Server onto the new machine without a problem.

I'm not using Hardware RAID at all and I'm getting the same problem if I select AHCI AND IDE.... Could this be something new?

OK an update on this, SME 7.6 has installed perfectly so I'm not sure what the issue is with V8?

It's currently syncing the raid to the 2nd HDD

Perhaps time to open a bug at Bugzilla.  Please provide a full summary of the problem, not just a link to this topic.
Thanks.

Could be a dodgey CD, try downloading the iso again and creating another copy of the cd, actually it sounds more like a dodgey cd/iso than anything else.

Unlikely it's the CD as I downloaded the ISO from several different Mirrors and also tried both the x86_64 iso and the i386 iso. All had the same result.

As yet no clear reason has been found for this however the following may be useful to somone searching here with a problem..see Bug Ref: http://bugs.contribs.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7248

There has been some talk re Centos 6 and the N40L microserver don't know if its related or not.
