this is being done from a fresh install of sme 8

your directions say start with 7

so does that mean you can't install within 8

You should be successful if you follow his advice and install per link example

Stefano

I think keithone33 is reading the wiki contrib page for remote access contrib, where it has headings that say Install sme 7 and then later says Install sme8.

I think he is literally reading the words & not understanding.
The grammar could be improved.

I also think he has missed seeing the link you provided in an earlier post, where you said
"read here then" which had a link to
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME8.0_Contribs_QA#Setup
but I think keithone33 never actually clicked on the "here" link (as it was visually overlooked).

I personally feel the use of short links like that are easily overlooked by novices or less experienced users.
I have even missed them on a quick read.
Personally I think it would be far better that you and others post the full link ie
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME8.0_Contribs_QA#Setup

which is much more less likely to be overlooked by novice readers or readers "in a hurry"

So to keithone33

Please go to exactly this link which is for sme 8 and follow the instructions fully, keeping in mind you will need to configure a repo named sme7contribs on your newly installed sme8 server.
http://wiki.contribs.org/Remoteuseraccess#Installing_to_SME_8

Also when you install the remoteuseraccess contrib on sme 8 you need to use this command
yum --enablerepo=smecontribs --enablerepo=sme7contribs install smeserver-remoteuseraccess

The reasons that you need to setup a sme7contribs repo on sme 8 is explained here
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME8.0_Contribs_QA#Setup
which in brief says:
During the transition from SME7 to SME8, contrib packages will be migrated to the SME8 contrib repository. If the contrib is not yet in the SME8 Contrib repository and an entry in this Q&A suggests it will install properly then you will need to install the contrib from the SME7 repository.

You are misreading or misinterpreting the contrib wiki instructions, just use the steps referred to in the section Installing to SME 8

Read everything I said above again, just to be clear.

I believe you missed clicking on the link Stefano provided which would have told you how to setup the sme7contribs repo, and had you done that there would have been no confusion, the yum install command would have worked correctly, and you may not have got frustrated. People here were giving you the right advice, you just missed seeing it !

If ever this is an example of RTFM this is it, all the manual, particularly as, the Op said

"i host web sites for customers some (to my dismay) want to edit their own site, this seems to be a reasonable request just can't make it work?"

So they are no novice, far from it, it is in a commercial setting.

I am surprised Stefano was as controlled as they were. :-)

sorry did not disappear, have other things that need tending and i like to do this when i have the least interruptions.

so backed up customers, and moved temp to another server.
it had sme 8 on it
reloaded sme 7.2
logged in as root
entered command "yum --enablerepo=smecontribs install smeserver-remoteuseraccess"
the return error is ?error getting repository data for smecontribs, repository not found"
so my question is "now what"

welcome back

now what?

mmh.. let me think... mmmhh.... maybe installing something that is not 5 years old (http://forums.contribs.org/index.php/topic,37872.0.html) and unsupported? how do you expect it to work? are you jocking?

if you want to use SME, use SME8, follow the howtos, follow the suggestions, report here the issues/problems/error messages (copy and paste, fully, do not "translate" or write here whato do you think messages mean)

I will wait for your feedback

i originally start with sme 8 but most of the same messages about stuff being unavailable, thats why after getting so much fack i thought i would go back to sme 7 after all the instructions, i had been told to follow say to start with sme 7, additionally after this last failure i thought well maybe i did do something wrong in sme 8, having several machines with sme8 on them i went back and tried again.
directions followed from http://wiki.contribs.org/remoteyseraccess
error when finished "error getting repository data for smecontribs, repository not found"
i have done everything i was told, more than once, what am i missing?

Hi all,

The command should be:
yum --enablerepo=sme7contribs --enablerepo=smecontribs install smeserver-remoteuseraccess

I think this should resolve the problem. I just tried it and it worked.

If it works, then I will be happy because today HF solved my biggest problem after 2 weeks of hard work. So if I can help someone else...

SME is still the best,

1) db yum_repositories show sme7contribs
if nothing show = problem

2) second command, all 6 lines
 db yum_repositories set sme7contribs repository \
GPGCheck yes \
MirrorList http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/smeserver/mirrorlist/smecontribs-7 \
Name 'SME 7 - contribs' \
Visible no \
status disabled

3) then the command again and this time, it  should show sme7... to ...disabled
db yum_repositories show sme7contribs
sme7contribs=repository
GPGCheck=yes
MirrorList=http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/smeserver/mirrorlist/smecontribs-7
Name=SME 7 - contribs
Visible=no
status=disabled

4) then signal command
signal-event yum-modify

5) clean up
yum clean all

6) final command
yum --enablerepo=sme7contribs \
--enablerepo=smecontribs install smeserver-remoteuseraccess

Answer yes to the question in the command above

I am waiting...

2) second command, all 6 lines, the \ means to the server that the command continue on the next line. So enter all of it, cut and paste

db yum_repositories set sme7contribs repository \
GPGCheck yes \
MirrorList http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/smeserver/mirrorlist/smecontribs-7 \
Name 'SME 7 - contribs' \
Visible no \
status disabled

then 3) 4) 5) 6) and Bingo!
