delay email delivery- how to troubleshoot??
« on: December 04, 2012, 10:38:01 AM »
Hi Have a SME 7.6 with all updates- server/gateway mode.

Hosting 3 domains with mostly email traffic.
One of the domains we have setup a forwarding rule of all emails of that user to a gmail address. We have found on some occasions that the emails are received after a day or half a day from when it was sent.
Emails that are being processed by the server are generated by other email server/clients.
I have noticed that the delayed emails would pass through our server.
I have not been able to replicate the problem but problem emails were forwarded to me to confirm it. I have run tests today and everything went through and onto gmail within the minute.

Can anyone advise how best to troubleshoot and track the fault. There is no consistent time for this problem, so its difficult to repeat the problem.

Kind Regards. :-P

How is it automatically a fault? If your chosen RBLs block
an individual IP then, until the other end adopts a different
IP, your 'faulty' email transaction will be delayed. Normal.
Review your server's qmail and qpsmtpd logs...

Look at the headers of one of the delayed emails to find out exactly where the delay is occurring.

I have a client whose ISP includes a daily email throttle:
* The ISP won't allow any outbound traffic on port 25
* The ISP relay stops accepting email if the message count exceeds (~500?) in any 24 hour period
* Once the user is blocked for excessive messages, the block stays in place for 24 hours
