Backup to rotating set of removable drives

http://wiki.contribs.org/USBDisks#The_Problem
articulates and solves the problem of backup to a rotating set of removable drives by arranging for a common mount point to be defined in fstab for all of the different drives' labels, and using the common mount point for backup.  This worked fine up to 7.5.
Now, with the label definitions included in fstab in 8.0 (& 7.6), the removable drive is automatically mounted on rebooting (and initial connection?) and backup fails because the backup drive is already mounted.  This is not a bug, but a documented feature.  Even if manually unmounted, the common mount point is not available in the backup managemet panel to select as the backup destination.  By removing the label definitions from fstab, the attached removable drive is not mounted automatically, but is available for backup at a mount point based on the label.  However when the next drive in the rotating set the mount point setup in the Backup Panel is wrong because the new disk's mount point is based on its (different) label.
Is the solution to give all of the removable media in the rotating set the same label? Or is there another documented solution matching the previous one which is so well hidden that I have been unable to find it?
