If 'restoring' by workstation backup, do you rename the workstation backup directory to match the new server name. or name the new server to match the current server?

Both seem to have risks

IIUC give the new server the real FQDN and setup the backup job per original server. When you run the restore it will then be able to find the backup file & path to rhe backup file.

There should be no risks, what risks are you referring to ?

If you have two computers with the same name on a network, bad things can happen!

If you change the backup directory name, the chances are you won't get a backup .

Create a backup to workstation with the new computer and its new name, IP etc..

Copy the backup set from the old systems backup directory to the new systems backup directory..

Take old system off the network, carry out a Restore on new system..

Do any name changing, ip change etc you want on new system..

and if you want restart the old system..
