SAIL Serial Number
« on: December 11, 2010, 05:29:25 AM »
The file /opt/sark/perl/modules/sark/SarkSubs.pm
has a subroutine rets()
which makes a file with a random 6 digit number preceeded by a period (.)
in the folder /opt/sark/passwd

It is this (upto) 6 digit random number that is displayed in the SAIL home page on the right hand side as the Serial.

Since it is a mere random number, it is possible that 2 or more installations may have the same serial.

Months ago, when I asked for it's relevance, the sark-devs replied that it was an internal number used for tracking registered users who subscribe for their paid service.

Is this number tracked for all users in some sark-devs database?

Is there any info sent back to the sark-devs (or other) site on a fresh install of (or on each login) SARK/SAIL ?

I'd be surprised if Selintra collected any personal data due to the UK Data Protection Act 1998, they take data protection more seriously in the UK than the US. I know because I've lived in both countries  :-P

Sorry missed this

No we don't send anything back.

We used to do a count but we don't even do that in 3.x.

I think we may re-introduce a count in the upcoming iso release,  but that's all.

Kind Regards
