How to hide desktop.ini, $RECYCLE.BIN in redirected folders
« on: December 01, 2010, 02:49:47 PM »
Hello all,

I have just installed SME Server 8Beta6 and configured it for use as a samba domain controller. I can successfully join XP, Vista and Win7 to the samba domain and thats great  :-P. Now the question is how do I hide the desktop.ini and $RECYCLE.BIN in my redirected folders. Is there a db configuration entry for this?

Hi Troels
desktop.ini is a Windows file - see http://tinyurl.com/2dlqfwv
This tells you how you can hide the file(s)

$recycle.bin is another Windows concept - see http://tinyurl.com/22nz6kc
SME has a contrib to add a Recycle bin to NW shares - see http://wiki.contribs.org/RecycleBin
However, it is a SME 7.x contrib - I am not sure if this works with SME8

I am a bit unsure of what you actually want by trying to hide $recycle.bin.

Good luck
Ian

Hello Ian,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my post.

What I'm trying to accomplish is to hide irrelevant files from the user. The normal user gets confused when odd files starts showing up in their Documents folder.

I have created a vb login script that redirects the My Documents folder to the users Home drive, so that the users can't store anything locally when using that folder, the plan is to do that for:

Desktop
Favorites
My Documents (with sub folders):
My Music
My Pictures
My Videos

I know that samba has a switch for hiding desktop.ini files and $recycled.bin folders, but how do we incorporate it into to the SME Server
hide files = /desktop.ini/RECYCLER/

Have you looked at the links I gave you?
Hiding the desktop.ini is done in Windows.

I believe it does not matter where the files actually are  -on C: (local) or Z: (n/w)

If you hide the desktop.ini files, you also hide the recycler, I think.

Cheers
Ian

Hello Ian,

I have looked at the links that you posted, and all switches to hide system files etc. is on. This must be a samba setting missing.
