Slow Internet and Emails Problems
« on: April 20, 2010, 01:06:35 AM »
I'm hoping someone gat help me.  Starting last week we began to experience extremely slow internet download speeds and when anyone accesses emails through Outlook 7 we continually get a popup window stating “Connecting to the Server” which slows things down even more.  Our VOIP is also being affected by this problem but the internet speeds to our modem from Qwest are good.

My server is the SME Server 7.5rc1.  I have the Qwest modem which feeds the SME Server and then the Server feeds the Switch which then feeds the (5) computers in the office.  This server holds our webpage and all emails.  Is there an easy way to restore all the default settings of the server without losing any of the information on the drives?  I’m also getting the following when I view “Disk Usage”:

Filesystem      Size   Used   Avail   Use%   Mounted on
/dev/mapper/main-root
                                         32G   4.5G   26G   16%   /
/dev/md1                    99M   43M   52M   46%   /boot
None         506M   0   506M   0%   /dev/shm
/dev/md3                    34G   14G   19G   43%   /backups
/dev/md4                    34G   94M   32G   1%   /home/fileserv

G'day Spike

The first thing I would do is look at my local network PC's and make sure nothing is consuming all the bandwidth on you.

This on all five computers not just the one so I'm confident that it has something to do with the server not to mention that the servers not recognizing one of the drives.  Any ideas?

signal-event post-upgrade
signal-event reboot

Doing the above may not fix your problem as the problem is still undiagnosed.
In server manager select View log files
and review the various files looking for clues, start with the messages log file
Also use the commands
top -i
and
htop
to see what processes are running and using up system resources
Please search before asking, an answer may already exist.

Are you using RAID? Did you receive any failure messages on the admin address? If you did not check them please do so. If you are using RAID it might be one of your disks has failed or is in a faulty state.

Furthermore: did you make any changes that might have lead to this problem? Did you modify your network topology? Added additional routers, switches or hosts? What is your server version? What is the server history? You do not give us very much information to help you troubleshoot. Please keep in mind that we do not have a (USB powered) crystal ball here and are not sitting at your server to look around and do diagnosis.

Does reply #2 indicate a failed drive or one that has not been setup correctly?

I strongly suspect that your network problems are due to one or more WIndows computers being infected with malware.

You didn't mention the server (servers?) not recognizing one of the drives. What are you talking about here?

On reply #2 above I show the following (why is one of the 4 drives showing "None"?):

I’m also getting the following when I view “Disk Usage”:

Filesystem      Size   Used   Avail   Use%   Mounted on
/dev/mapper/main-root
                                  32G   4.5G   26G   16%   /
/dev/md1                    99M   43M   52M   46%   /boot
None                          506M   0   506M   0%   /dev/shm
/dev/md3                    34G   14G   19G   43%   /backups
/dev/md4                    34G   94M   32G   1%   /home/fileserv

You haven't said that you have 4 drives (and we have no crystal ball), but in any case that is not relevant.

/dev/md4                    34G   94M   32G   1%   /home/fileserv

"None" refers to the physical drive associdated with shared memory (used for inter process communication):
