Losing the internet every night!
« on: January 27, 2009, 01:47:48 PM »
Hi All,

My server is setup as server/gateway using a cable modem from Brighthouse and has been like this for at least the last 5 years with no problems what so ever. Then last week I got into the office and I had no internet at my desktop, so I logged in as admin did the internet test and it failed. I rebooted the server and everything was fine until next morning  :???: I again rebooted and again everything was fine all day but no internet next morning  I have since changed the NIC and still it is the same  Can anyone shed some light on it, I am lost for ideas now other than putting in a router and configuring it as server only  I have installed all available updates so it is bang up to date  Thanks in advance.

Didn't know anyone was using sme here in Florida.

I'm also using BrightHouse.

Your config....?

modem >> SME server gateway

or

modem >> switch >> SME server gateway

Have you rebooted the modem?
Do Modem lights drop off line when you loose internet?
Version of SME 7.x?  (bang up to date, assume you mean 7.4)
You have BH VOIP or have you added any other VOIP recently?
What model modem do you have?
Did you upgrade to turbo recently?
Is the dwelling old/new? (need to look at possible electrical issues)

Should give the modem status page.
Copy & paste that here.

If signal levels are low then the modem will drop off line and might require a reboot.

Receive Power Level above 0 dBmV

Transmit Power Level between 45-55 dBmV

Need those modem results, sounds like your levels are marginal.

Might have to call BH and get the modem reset count.

If resets are high then that indicates cable or modem issues.

BH techs will come out and do their normal dog and pony show, their not very Bright....haha.

ifconfig results would be good to know also.

Not likely the nic will be the issue.

BTW if you've been on BH for 5years then you can get 4 external IP's for free.
That was part of the old contract when T/W had it, they still have to give them to ya.

other than putting in a router and configuring it as server only

No need to do that.
First there's no need to switch to server only.
Second you can put a router ahead of SME which would offer more system control and isolation.

Router & Server only, will not solve your problem.

PM if you like, I'm in CFL.
