Ive been waiting for the 8.0 for a few months - my inner SME Server clock keeps naggin' me to go and check if any RC is released.

What is the release cycle of SME Server? "When its ready"?

Ive been wondering about something else. It seems that Centos 4 is frozen at kernel 2.6.9. Do SME use/mirror the kernel of Centos 4, and when are new kernel builds released into the repos?

All the fuss is about getting (better) support for the CX700 chipset, but also nice things to know, in order to plan installs/updates/modifications of current servers.

There is some information in the wiki about the release cycle: http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Constitution:Development_Group_Guidance#Release_Cycle . However SME Server 8 will only be released when it is stable and all relevant bugs in the bugtracker are fixed and verified I guess, so there is some work to do.

Yes they do, when CentOS releases a new kernel.

All the fuss is about getting (better) support for the CX700 chipset, but also nice things to know, in order to plan installs/updates/modifications of current servers.

I guess you will have to buy better supported hardware, invest in development (by coding or donating) or be even more patient

There also needs to be a lot more people (interest) testing and reporting back to the bug tracker if we are (ever) to get an SME Server 8 release out.

So if any one wants to see an SME Server 8.x release get involved and help make it happen!

I have seen SME Server 8beta1 being in Beta1 since December 2007. What is the progress? Is it anywhere close to being  Release Candidate?
I would like to test the software, but only computer I have available to test on is Pentium1, and  SME 8 will not support it.

I am not sure how I can determine that just by looking at matrix. All I see is that the number of bug reports for SME Server Release 8.X is very small as compared to SME Server Release 7.X
But that can be one of two things, SME8 is very stable and does not have many bugs in it, or not many people are testing it.
But I can't tell which one is the case just by looking at matrix.

If latter is the case, I believe you might get more people participating if a forum was created for SME Server 8.X
I know developers really want people to post problems at Bugzilla, but most people prefer to check with other people: "Is this a bug or did I F... up somewhere" Before posting a bug. Because at a bugzilla, if it is not a bug, only answer you get there is "this is not a bug, closing"

We were talking about SME8, and there are total of 36 bugs there.

I have been using SME server since version 6, when version 6.5 was in the works (which never came out) and when SME7 was in Beta, both projects had a forum when they were in Beta stage. And I did Beta test both projects.

And you don't always just have bugs, sometimes you have questions about something you are not sure about. And right now there is no place to do that for SME8 Beta

Possibly more people would be involved in the development team if there were some type of published structure or roles to fill (triage, testers, webmasters, etc).

That's important to have that but it doesn't look like it's done too much to gather hands on efforts.

No, you are right, but it was meant to try and setup some sort of management team to guide such a process.

OK, I'm about to set up 8 on a P4 box.  Can someone guide me as to what reporting I should be doing - I've never used a bugzilla before, although I have done testing & error reporting on proprietary systems where I used to work.

Not sure exactly, you could start by looking at the bugs for SME8 that are not marked RESOLVED. Every other item you run into should be reported to the bugtracker.
Furthermore you can try and verify issues marked RESOLVED but not VERIFIED.
