Isn't the idea to use the features of moodle rather than still saving data in students homes.

Not really.  Moodle isn't a file storage place.  It's a great way to distribute resources to students.  Kids still save their files in the homes, but they can select files to upload to the teacher through moodle.  Teachers often have a need to view the contents of students' folders.

I doubt that this specific functionality (as a NFR) would be included into sme base.

There are 3 methods presented in this thread which allow workarounds, with varying degree of effort required, so one of those is your best choice for now.
