SME cant find ethernet
« on: May 12, 2008, 06:58:20 PM »
I has installed SME on a older IBM T21, which I would like to use as printserver. There are only 1 ethernetcard, and therefor I installed it as "server only"

The instalation went fine, but it cannot connect to the lan. SME cannot find the ethernetcard, and I cant see the comp from my router.

Serverconfig is set as:

Domain name:  Localserver.srv
System names: smeserver
Local Ip adr: 192.168.1.110
Local subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
Operation mode: Server-only
Gateway IP:  192.168.1.1
DHCP:        Off Do not provide DHCP service to local network (has tried ON - does not work to)
DNS serveradresse: 193.162.153.164 (TDC)

When I reboots I get this error:
"Failed - etHO 3c59x device does not seems to be present delaying initialation"

When I make a ifconfig, it tells that there are no ethernet.

I has tried to uninstall SME and install Ubuntu, and Ubuntu has no trouble to find the lan.

What does I do vrong?  :-(

Clearly your ethernet card is not supported by SMEServer.  I suggest you  look here:

http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter4

and then here:

https://hardware.redhat.com/list.cgi?version=4&internal_whiteboard=Component/Peripheral

In general I use ethernet boards based on the realtek 8139 chip, which work "out of the box".
