SME 7.3 SATA Install problem
« on: February 07, 2008, 11:10:45 PM »
I need help getting SME 7.3 installed on a Abit AN-52 with the Nforce 520 chipset with 2 Western Digital WD25000 SATA hard disks. I've done searches here in the forum but haven't found anything that covers the exact problem I'm having. It is possible/likely I missed something ...Here's what I've done so far based some of things I've found in the forum....in the BIOS there's no way to turn off ACPI, so I tried doing an install using 'sme acpi=off' no luck there. I've set the jumpers to 150/mbps transfer rate no luck there either. In both cases the CD boots up fine but then gets to a point and says no drives were found, it allows me to manually select a driver so I picked the Nvidia sata driver and the generic sata figuring one should work but no luck. The error I get in all cases is " No valid devices were found on which to create new file systems". If anyone has more suggestions of what I can do to get this going I'm all ears.

Do you have the RAID turned off in the bios?

If not, try turning it off and let SME create a software raid array for you.
In life, you must either "Push, Pull or Get out of the way!"

Yes RAID is disabled from the BIOS...I also tried with RAID enable but error is the same in both cases.

If it does not work out of the box, may I suggest you bring this issue to the attention of the developpers by making a Bug Report at Bugzilla.  OK, it may take a little of your time, but in the end you will know what  the problem is and the Distro will be improved  if this is a bug and if it can be fixed.
Thanks.

I will submit a bug report but as an aside I was able to get Ubuntu Desktop 64-bit to install and work with one catch...I had to edit the boot loader and add acpi=off before it would come back up after a reboot.

Is there anyone out there that's successfully been able to get SME 7.3 on clean SATA disks with the nForce chipset?

Ubuntu Desktop 64-bit to install

I would suggest you try to install 32Bit Centos 4.6 and note your results in your bug report.

Regards,
William

IF I give advise.. It's only if it was me....
