When installing contribs ? which logs should you inspect ?
« on: March 27, 2008, 08:42:11 PM »
Hi all

Running SME 7.1xx

I've installed several contribs that are working well and not sure these contribs would have anything to do with my latest attempt to install Dar2.
I wanted to upgrade to 7.3 from my 7.3 CD that i've just burned.
I figured I would backup the server first using Dar2 ? Since I don't have a tape drive installed.

Dar2 will not install, I'll post back the actually error I get about some file that is missing.
I'll retry the installation and copy the exact error message.

Anyhow, in addtion which logs should I inspect to evaluate a contribs installation error ? There are so many logs I'm not sure where to look first ?

Please advise
Thank

The messages log file is a good place to start
Then look at the the various http log files.
There should also be a dar (or similar depending on the contrib) log file.

Did you install as per this Howto (which should work OK)
http://wiki.contribs.org/DAR2

It sounds to me like a missing dependency issue, which should be easy to resolve, post your exact error message. Files have moved around to new repos recently and caused some grief to unknowing users.

Ray -

Thanks for the reply,

Yes I installed per the contribs instruction for Dar2, I noticed Dar backup is for SME 7.2 so I did not install that one,

Here is what the installation process tells me:

I'll check my logs now, and post what I find on that also. As far as this installation goes it looks like simple dependency problem to me also, I don't know how to fix it.

Thanks

P.S I do not see anything in the logs that would give me alarm no apparent errors in the httpd-error logs etc.
assuming that I'm looking in the right place

That's not correct.
Backup with dar requires a minimum of sme7.2, ie 7.2 or more recent, so the package will run OK on sme7.3.

I made it clearer in the wiki article.

I'm not referring to DAR2, I'm referring to a different backup system that is undergoing testing for inclusion in the base release, which is currently in the smetest repo, ie Backup with dar

Hi
So now I see my panel item, Thanks

Is there any further instructions someplace on how to use it and what files I can add to my backup.

Basically I want to add the ibays, any horde info like users, filemanger, calendar, tasks etc. I don't want to loose that, stuff.

and what about my joomla install and data ?? can this backup or will I need to reinstall all contribs ? after my backup is done ?

Please advise if there are more documents on how to use this tool, thanks

The panel has lot's of descriptions for what each field is for, just use it !

The main backup job is called a Disaster Recovery backup, so you should create that job, and perhaps include /opt if you have stuff installed there.

This contrib conforms to the sme backup/restore concept that requires add on contribs to be reinstalled after a restore to a freshly installed sme OS.

Try a small backup of a selected folder eg /root only, to test it out and get your shares & settings configured correctly. A backup of /root only, should take a minute or two, so you will quickly see if it is working OK.
Once it's working OK, then setup the Disaster Recovery job.

Hi all

Ok, so here is where I'm at now with my attempt to backup my SME server.
I'm trying to understand what I'm reading in DAR2 panel:

I see this item:
Quote
Three file systems are supported. [ext3] for backup to local attached disk. [smbfs] for backup to Windows workstation and SME Server network shares. [cifs] for backup to Microsoft Windows Server. Note if using cifs, target entry above must use IP address. Example: [//10.1.1.1/sharename].

So which one do I use in order to backup to a Linux Desktop ? such as Ubuntu,Mepis,Freespire etc.
I don't see this addressed in this instruction ?
Perhaps I don't understand what I'm reading?

I cannot seem to figure out how to backup to desktop, the old Back feature was sooo simple just select your file location and give the file a name ?

Please advise
Thanks

Hi all
Perhaps this questions is considered solved and I should open a new post ??

Although I've not figured out how to backup to desktop properly yet, I noticed if I leave the target blank the DAR2 does appear to create a folder and backup file inside of the / (root) directory of the SME server.

Perhaps I could just copy that to my desktop ? or would that have the same 2GB-4GB limitations when trying to transfer the 12GB of data to the desktop ?

Let me know if I should create a new post for this topic since my initial post has really been solved at this point. which was regarding the logs and the installation of DAR2

Thanks all.
Please advise
