Humble Help Please
« on: January 23, 2008, 06:06:33 AM »
Dear Knowledgeble people,

I am totally new to Linux and regretting why i did check this piece of beauty out earlier.

I have installed a SMS 7.3 server and already loving it :)

How ever the primary intention for this server is to host our companys website.

So primarlily this machine is going to be a webserver in our windows domain.

I have installed the SMS server on a machine and i believe it works well ,

i tested the access to internet and it works well :)

Now i want to know where in this box do i need to place my web files and does linux support asp, php and other languages or do we need to install some thing which would facilitate this.

Any comments and suggestions are welcome :)

Please help me guys !

Regards :)

Welcome to SME

Start out by reading the manuals and docs at :
http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation

Yes, out the box it supports php, but please read, and read possibly a third time the manuals.

Try searching for "CMS" or Content Management System in the forum. There are a number of packages that will work. You may want to google each package and see what they offer.

It is not unusual to have some issues when you are new to the process, but you need to do a couple of things.

1) There are a number of threads or posts that supply details of how to install all contribs with problems documented and solved. So search "Joomla install problem" and you might find that your problem has been solved.

2) if you supply details the people who know (not me) how will find it a) less frustrating b) easier to solve.

After searching and reading, and still nothing happens, post a copy of your putty or winscp commands/responses and I am sure, baed on my experience, you will get help.

How about this for a start: http://wiki.contribs.org/SME_Server:Documentation:Administration_Manual:Chapter14

Moving this topic to the SME 7.x contribs forum, it is more appropriate there. Thanks!
