Install fails [couldn't find kickstart]
« on: March 30, 2002, 07:09:32 AM »
G'day all,
I'm trying to install SME server on an old HP netserver from a SCSI CDROM.
I noticed a few others have had similar problems that remain unanswered, is this a bug???
When I boot from the SME CD, it recognizes the bootable CD but then freezes at this prompt "SYSLINUX 1.48 1999-09-26 (blinking cursor)" but does not respond to the keyboard.

When I boot from the cdboot floppy. I get past the "accept" bit & starts to load files then dies with this message which is fragmented all over the screen
Couldn't find kickstart file /tmp/ks.cfg install exited abnormally .......... sending kill .............. you may reboot. The CDROM at this stage is locked up (won't open), and will not operate till reboot is finished.

Other OS's (Windows, RedHat) boot and install from the CD with no problems.

Any Ideas??

Dont use the cdboot image, its the boot image for the actual CD. Use the boot.img instead.

G'day Damien,
Thx 4 reply,
The boot img floppy behaves very similarly to the cdboot img floppy, except the message is:
failed to read /modules/module-info install exited abnormally .............. you may safewly reboot your system

Strange, tried again, twice. This time it proceeds to load the scsi driver, asks 4 language & keyboard asks "what type of media contains the package to be installed?" >local CDROM >Hard Drive. I select >Local CDROM & click OK. I then get an error message "I could not find a Mitel Networks SME server CDROM ...............etc, click OK to retry" Maybe I was sent a dude CD????

From left field.....

I don'y have a CDROM on the server, so loaded the CD on another box and used the network install. (this needs a box that can be a http, ftp or nfs server). Just used static ip's until I had the sme box up and running.

Thanks Trevor,
But I think I'll wait till they sort a few bugs with this distro, I noticed a few silly bits like the total bytes & time being incorrect if they have trouble with that???? There's also a few other posts that seem to point to the same problem without an answer so I don't want to waste too much time chasing my tail also the distro it's based on RH7.1 and 4 other OS's install fine so it's a programming bug, I'd rather take the risk of using Wundoze. Now it's between Debian and RedHat. Any votes???
cheers & thx 4 your help.

Why don't you try with an IDE CDROM?

Thanks for your reply Lazo,
Didn't I mention it? I have, works fine. Problem is most servers use SCSI CDROM, I've tried 3 different servers here, HP Netserver, Compaq Prolient & a Tyan, SME won't install on any of these. The server where we want to use SME with the service link is also a scsi cdrom. What's the use of Server Software that won't install on a Server!!!  LOL.
cheers,
Lindsay
