bttv and DVR on SME 7.2
« on: September 20, 2007, 06:43:31 PM »
Hello there,

Is there anyone who could make a bttv848 (miro pctv) working on a SME ? For example with videolan ?

My main purpose is to use my SME as a Digital Video Recorder and Broadcaster over the LAN.

Anyone to get the challenge with me ?

Edd

Why not take CentOS and install MythTV to do something like that? SME Server is designed to be a server and to use it as a PVR you will have to load a lot of extra stuff on SME Server they have left out for security reasons and being unneccesary for it's tasks. Choosing SME Server as a DVR/PVR is trying to get eggs by milking a cow. I personally run a MythTV box on CentOS 5 very succesfully and without much hassle, but alongside my SME Server box, not on it.

Hi there,
That's interesting, but

My main purpose is to use sme as a record, centralise and broadcadst videos, and this is, somehow, the aim of a server.
I don't want to watch videos on the sme box it self, but thru the lan on different machines.

What do you think about this ?

It is a nice thing, but all is offered quite easily by a normal CentOS installation with mythtv and the mythweb plugin, probably far easier than trying to force the SME Server to install all kinds of necessary additional software like X and all the libraries needed for bbtv.

I did a out of the box CentOS installation, installed mythtv-suite from atrpms, enabled the configuration for mythweb and was under way in about an hour tops. The mythweb plugin does an excellent job on programming recordings and streaming them (as well as audio files like MP3) to clients in your network. Why bother developing such a thing from scratch yourself when it is much much easier to lean on a system used by many people, and which has proven pretty accepted by the community other than the educational part of it?

On top of that mythtv comes with a lot of features like a program guide, which makes scheduling recordings very easy and comfortable.

I may add something,
I don't have any free machine to install centos out of the box...that's whay I wanted to integrate it in SME.
Another machine, means, more time to administrate it, another IP to add in client machines, blablabla.  I would like to centralise to maximum things on one server, even if it's bit too much a "to do everything machine"

Thank's for you anwsers anyway,
Edd

I have been dubbing to post this as I (and probably the developers with me consider it a very very bad thing to do) and at the risk of being shot down in flames:

Al tough not supported you could try and install mythtv-suite from ATrpms.

Be advised that it installs lots of packages that are left out of SME Server on purpose, which might leave your system in a state which is not supported by the developers. There is a strong possibility you will get no support when hitting problems and entering them in the bug tracker.

On top of that those packages might oppose a very strong issues concerning security to your system, one of the other main reasons they were left out of the package as the more complex the system gets, the harder it is to keep it secure. One example is the graphical shell (X windows) which is needed to run mythtv. If you have the choice do not install it on SME Server, but do it on a separate machine using CentOS or another distribution of your liking.

You won't get flamed by me.  I run my backend on smeserver as well.  I do have separate cos5 frontends for watching.  Here are the mythtv/ivtv packages I've got installed on my smeserver (from atrpms).

libmyth-0.20.2_0-0.20.2-165.el4
libmythavcodec-0.20.2_0-0.20.2-165.el4
libmythavformat-0.20.2_0-0.20.2-165.el4
libmythavutil-0.20.2_0-0.20.2-165.el4
libmythfreemheg-0.20.2_0-0.20.2-165.el4
libmythlivemedia-0.20.2_0-0.20.2-165.el4
libmythtv-0.20.2_0-0.20.2-165.el4
libmythui-0.20.2_0-0.20.2-165.el4
libmythupnp-0.20.2_0-0.20.2-165.el4
myththemes-0.20.2-114
mythtv-backend-0.20.2-165.el4
mythtv-frontend-0.20.2-165.el4
mythtv-setup-0.20.2-165.el4
mythtv-themes-0.20.2-165.el4
mythweb-0.20.2-165.el4

ivtv-0.4.10-114.el4
ivtv-firmware-20070217-13.at
ivtv-kmdl-2.6.9-55.0.6.EL-0.4.10-114.el4
ivtv-kmdl-2.6.9-55.0.6.ELsmp-0.4.10-114.el4
perl-Video-ivtv-0.13-8.el4.at

If I remember correctly I needed the frontend package in order to load some of the graphical libraries needed to run mythtvsetup.  Beyond installing the above (plus dependencies) I enabled X11 forwarding and configured the system from one of the remote frontends.

I'm a tivo user so I don't need mythTV, but I can see the benefits of a formal set of instruction for others.
Here is a stub for others to continue working on

To cactus :

I think everybody is agree to say that we just need a "thing" that manage the tunercard, record input according a programmed schedule, viewable in an ibay, and store avi (or other) files under samba.
And, possibly broadcast the TV flux on the LAN, over http ou multicast...

For me, this is only the backend, but I'm maybe wrong.

to this, do we need x and qt and other unsecure items ?

To slord :
As I am quite newbie, how do yo uactive X11 forwarding ?
Is there a process to follow to install what you say ?

and last but not least, is there any frontend for ...XP (don't shout)

Thanks for all,
Edd

Yes, OT on this forums off course, but there is some sort of application to view it using Windows (http://www.sudu.dk/mythtvplayer/index.php). You could also use the mythweb plugin which allows for downloading and streaming video as well. If you have more questions about MythTV not concerning SME Server in particular I would like to redirect you to the MythTV wiki.

I don't know exactly which packages you need/are about to install but it might well be that depend on X or another window maker... at least the frontend seems to do so. I did not bother installing on SME Server as I found it easier to create a new box using plain CentOS.

1. Open a server shell as root and start by adding the atrpms repository to your configuration with the command you can find in the wiki.
2. Regenerate your yum.conf file like so:
Code: [Select]
expand-template /etc/yum.conf3. Try to install mythtv-backend:
Code: [Select]
yum install mythtv-backend --enablerepo=atrpms

Yes, I guess you do not have the up-to-date repository settings, altough I see other strange things in the output as well...

What version of yum are you using:
Code: [Select]
rpm -q yumAnd of smeserver-yum:
Code: [Select]
rpm -q smeserver-yum
What version of the server are you currently running?
If 7.2: Did you apply the procedure described in the wiki: http://wiki.contribs.org/Updating_to_SME_7.2 ?

I believe this is a good example for a virtual machine implementation, but the problem with that is accessing the hardware tuners if MythTV is running in a Virtual machine. But what about going the other way and install a base MythTV install and then adding in what else you need. I know a MythTV install http://www.mysettopbox.tv that includes all relevent Myth plugins including MythWeb. It includes SAMBA, web server and MythTV. The only thing that may be missing is email server.

Just putting it out there and seeing if the breeze will make it fly.

I don't think the PCI(X) bus gets passed to the guest but the USB does, although only 1.1.

[root@server ~]# rpm -q yum
yum-2.9.4-74.el4.at
This is higher version than you should have on your server. If you run SME Server 7.2 and you have all updates you should have yum-2.4.3-4.el4.centos.

This indicates that you have updated part of your system with non-supported RPM's as it read el4.at and not el4.centos (My guess is that it is from atrpms). Did you perhaps enable more than the list of repositories advised in the wiki?

You might be... you made it a lot harder anyway.

First revert the default enbaled setting like this:
Code: [Select]
db yum_repositories setprop atrpms status disabled
expand-template /etc/yum.conf
Try and see what RPMS where upgraded from atrpms by looking at the /var/log/yum/yum.log file at least from the date you enabled atrpms by default. Perhaps we can try and revert the changes.

My /var/log/yum.conf at the acurate date.
I tried to install mythtv from the list we saw sooner, and tried to remove them after as I felt unable to install it correctly

I also made an update from the control panel ... this is a mess !
Thanks anyway

Uninstalling mythtv seems to have worked, however it seems you also updated your server from the atrpms repository andthose updates are your biggest problem.

I also made an update from the control panel ... this is a mess !
Thanks anyway
You can say so, that is why the repositories are entered in the wiki in a disabled state!

It will be very hard to uninstall all RPM's and then reinstall the proper ones, especially as you will have to remove yum, which is the package managing and installing the updates.

My best bet is you try and make a backup first so in case we mess up while repairing/reverting you won't loose your data.

After that you might try reinstalling your server from CD and restore the backup and re-install all contribs. This possibly is the easiest and quickest way of getting your system to a normal state. After that you can try and install mythtv again, but be sure to not set the atrpms repository to enabled.

Use this on a server shell to enable atrpms only for the job you are specifying and install the mythtv backend
Code: [Select]
yum install mythtv-backend --enablerepo=atrpms

ha ...

This server has also an asterisk in it ... however, it's also a nonstable version, then ...lets do this !
I'll be even more secure, I'll use another Harddrive...

f..k ! I'm dumb !
thank you anyway.

Did you also install mythtv-setup and run that? Do you have the database installed?

Cactus,

thanks for the reply.
I read everything twice, got confused about the different posts.
I read about bout installing the myttv with Xwindows, but I only want the backend.
Can you point me in the right way to setup database and run mythtvsetup?

Hi there, I'm rather hesitant to post on forums as I either get ignored or my get head chewed off, but there comes a point where the fray needs entering.

Like edeganay (and others), I would like to get myth up and running on an SME-centered network. A fresh 7.2 install is on the box to be used as a backend. After reading the forums, I believe I was able to get the correct setting for getting the ATrpms from yum. Duncan's How-To was helpful to a point until it jumped around and omitted steps (for example exactly when/where to install and set up mythtv) that everyone seems to know except myself. When it came time to install the backend packages, I got this:

Code: [Select]
root@server bin]# yum install mythtv-backend --enablerepo=atrpms

So where am I going wrong? Also, slords posted the list of the mythtv/ivtv packages running on his backend. Would it be foolish to think that all those will be installed with yum?

Quote
If I remember correctly I needed the frontend package in order to load some of the graphical libraries needed to run mythtvsetup.  Beyond installing the above (plus dependencies) I enabled X11 forwarding and configured the system from one of the remote frontends.

It would be great if there was a walk-through explaining how you got all these working together, as I doubt this will be the only roadblock I stumble over.

ok looks like im wasting my time with the whole mythtv on sme thing. i enjoy learning new things and tweaking stuff from time to time but slogging through endless forums on multiple sites just to find partial or outdated information all while making no tangible progress is just getting old.

maybe i should just rent a tivo and be done with it.
